Climbing Bruach na Frithe in foggy condition

Climbing Bruach na Frithe in foggy condition

Postby Jasmine_21 » Mon Jul 26, 2021 6:51 pm

We just arrived in Isle of Skye staying in Broadford. The weather forecast seems foggy and thundery for the next two days :( . We were planning to climb the Bruach na Frithe tomorrow. Would it be even worth attempting to reach its top in foggy condition? Does anyone have any ideas on what else to do in thundery/foggy weather in Skye?

What do you mean by foggy?
If it's true fog, then it's entirely possible that the summit will be above the fog, so it would be worth it.
I suspect you mean low cloud, in which case it's up to you. If I'd travelled all the way to Skye, I'd probably go up in low cloud.
Thunder, on the other hand, would see me keeping to low levels off the peaks.
Plenty of Coastal walking and a distillery to visit!

I'd probably want to have sight of my line of ascent when climbing out of the coire on Bruach na Frithe.

Depends on your navigation skills, experience, and willingness to walk in the clouds. Its one of the easiest of the Cuillin hills, but that still makes it harder than many (most?) mainland hills.

As for the thunder, I wouldn't be going near the mountains if there's a chance of lightning, especially not somewhere as exposed as the Cuillin.

Looking at the MWIS forecasts, its not a particularly good day I'm afraid. However, you might get lucky with the odd break.

Also the Met Office, though Skye doesn't always follow the full NW Highlands pattern https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/specialist-forecasts/mountain/northwest-highlands#?date=2021-07-27

I'd be looking at a lower level walk myself, or head up but expecting to explore corries etc rather than get on the ridges.

Try this or just one or two of them, not munros but a brilliant walk and might be under the clouds?

Thanks all for your good advice. We tried it and it wasn't too bad. It was just super foggy and hard to navigate. No trace of thunderstorm for the past two days. I think indeed Skye doesn't follow the Met Office weather prediction! :D

Because of where Skye is, the weather is notoriously changeable.
For hillwalking, I tend to use the MWIS forecasts, as they are tailored to mountain users.
