Borders camp sites for St Cuthberts Way

Borders camp sites for St Cuthberts Way

Postby Tazmania » Wed Aug 25, 2021 6:36 pm

Hello!

I am planning on walking St Cuthberts Way and wanted to spend the weekend of 18-19 September in Melorse before walking on Monday, plannig on reaching Beal on Friday so I can cross to Holy Island on Saturday morning and returning from the island on the afternoon bus.

However, the camp site at Melrose closes on 14 September and there is no availability for grass pitches at the one at Jedburgh that weekend (I had mistakenly thought that this time of year would be quiet for camping).

Do you know of any other convenient camp sites nearby where I could arrive on Saturday, visit Melrose on Sunday and return on Monday morning (all by bus)? If not, is there a hostel?

Thank you.

PS. If there is nothing, is it possible to walk the Borders Abbey Way by basing oneself at a camp site on the route and commuting to and from starting and finishing points by bus?

Once again, many thanks.

Hi

I have just completed St Cuthbert's Way and used the campsites below which are on or within a mile of the Way

Melrose Gibson Park Caravan Club Site is open all year and has 6 tent pitches. (01896 822969)

Kirkfield Caravan Park in Town Yetholm open until end of October (bus service to Kelso - not Sunday - then on to Melrose)

Highburn House Caravan Park in Wooler.

Hetton Hall caravan and campsite (about 1 mile from St Cuthbert’s Way)

The Barn at Beal campsite, open all year.

Hope this helps

Thank you.

Unfortunately the camp site in Melrose closes to tents on 14 September, so I wondered whether there was another one commutable by bus to Melrose.

Google suggests Lilliardsedge, on the way to Jedburgh (68 bus route)
https://lilliardsedgepark.co.uk/touring-camping/camping/

I know nothing more about it than that, though!

(That Monday is a school holiday in Edinburgh at least, that might be making things busier.)

There is a limited bus service from Town Yetholm to Kelso - No 81 by Peter Hogg Coaches and an hourly service from Kelso to Melrose - No 67 by Border Buses.

There is a Camping and Caravanning site at Lauder, Carfraemill (01578 750697).
From there bus service 51 goes to St Boswells from where you can get a bus to Melrose - No 68

Many thanks, but I can reach Lilliardsedge Holiday Park by bus and it is closer to Melrose.

Much appreciated.
