Scarba?

Scarba?

Postby Sunset tripper » Sat Sep 04, 2021 11:13 am

I'm looking for some tips regarding the best way to get to Scarba and back.
I believe the guy who used to run the boat out of Craobh Haven has retired. :(

..... and I don't fancy dealing with that wild water myself.

Also if anyone has any info on the bothy on the south east corner of the island. It might be an option rather than camping.

Any info at all is appreciated - cheers. :D

This outfit appears to be still operating (at least there are recent Google reviews): https://farsain-cruises.business.site/
A recent trip seems to have been arranged with the island's owner: http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/mountaindetails.php?qu=SIB&rf=1457

Scarba. Just to wet your appetite. I am sure that this was Scarba across the sound of Luing that we were looking at from our camp on Luing at Black Mill Bay. :) Where we camped last Saturday night.

You could try Craignish Cruises out of Ardfern. They run good boat trips to the whirlpool and elsewhere, so might be able to fit you in for a trip to Scarba.

I'd love to go to Scarba, having gazed at it from the fabulous NW coast of Jura as a teenager. Didn't know there was a bothy.

Not taking my canoe anywhere near the Corryvreckan though!!!

I was there (including to the top) with a few friends in September 1996. Went out via Corryvreckan and back via the Grey Dog which felt like the more impressive of the two - the sea had sort of shelves and steps in it. It was a private hire - can't recall which boatman and anyway a quarter of a century has passed. Haven't ever been on Jura!

Thanks all. Great info on the boats - my own Google searches missed a lot of that stuff.

Great also to here of other trips to Scarba and the general area.
Mal - I am glad you have convinced me I was right not to consider tackling the Corryvreckan or the Grey Dogs.

Seafari out of Easdale might get you there if you are a party and hire the boat for the day…

Marc Calhouns blog has pictures to further whet your appetite…

Hi gaffr - yes that's it. I was on the Slate Isles myself last week and we had a great walk up to the high point on Luing. It is only 94m high and not on any of the popular lists, but what a viewpoint. A fine example of why it's not a bad idea to make your own list. :D

On Luing looking towards Easdale and Mull.

Yes, that Trigpoint perched above Cullipool just has to be reached. :) One path up and a different one down looking onto the rooftops of the houses.
