Ben More (Mull) for Skinflints

Ben More (Mull) for Skinflints

I'm sure someone else on here is bound to have rubbered the expense of taking the car across to Mull on the Ferry and opted instead to travel across with a bike and cycled to the hill from Craignure. The road looks like 18 miles each way and not particularly hilly.

Is this likely to be feasible in mid October? (I'm hoping to get it done before the winter timetable comes into play on 17/10).

Looks like you have 11 hours on Mull between the first and last ferries (except Sundays) - I would have thought that was fairly comfortable for the straight up and down route, but less so if you wanted to do the Beinn Fhada circuit.

There is also a feasible option by bus, according to https://steverabone.com/MunroWalker/munros_by_public_transport.htm#Section%2017%20The%20Islands

I would look into the bus Craignure Fionnphort

Looks like there are several buses each day. Climb from the south.

It's £28.50 for a return for the car on the ferry from Oban to Mull which is not bad + £7.70 for each passenger. It used to be close to £90 for a car and 2 passengers.
I've taken the bike from Oban a couple of times. Give yourself plenty time to park as it can be a nightmare and depend where you park could be around £10. A lot of places that used to be turn up and park are now charging.
Parking at Tescos used to be fine because it was never full but that is frowned upon now.

There is good parking at Mossfield shinty pitch which is a short bike ride, to the ferry and worth a look.
Shouldn't be any issues parking there.

All the best. :D

We've done it as a day trip from Oban on public transport. We were staying at the hostel so started and ended the day in Oban.

First ferry over, Craignure Fionnphort bus to the junction at NM 54627 29209. We included the Graham too and still had plenty time to wait for the bus.

The bus is timed to meet with the ferries thus works pretty well. Cycling would be a pain, the road round undulates a fair bit.

Thanks folks, that's very useful.

I think i'll probably go with the bike option from Craignure. The ascent over 18 miles isn't too dreadful (going by Strava). I reckon 1.5 hours each way on my MTB (less if i can be bothered swapping pedals on the road bike), and the hill should be doable in 4-5 hours or so.

Wild that the ferry used to be £90
