Alternative parking sugarbowl carpark (Cairn Toul-Braeriach

Postby Rene Gaudes » Sat Oct 02, 2021 4:15 pm

Hello. I am preparing a solo hike and roadtrip next year and would like to do the Cairn Toul-Braeriach traverse. It is a 2 day hike. Starting at sugarbowl car park. But I understand that there is no overnight parking. So I am looking for an alternative place to park. Preferably as near to the starting point as I can get. Does anybody have a tip?

Get the bus from Aviemore and ask the driver to drop you at the Sugarbowl car park.

Park at the Cairngorm mountain car park. There is a suggested donation of £2.
Alternatively, do it from Linn of Dee at the Braemar side.
There is also parking at Loch an Eileen but think it is quite expensive but the money is invested in the area.

There is the lower Cairngorm car park at Coire Na Ciste. Much of the car park has been taken over as a construction site and motorhome site but there is a small hill walkers care park there which specifically says overnight parking for cars is permitted (but no camping by the car park).

Alternatively there is a fair bit of off road parking in the area in laybys,

There is also off road parking lower down at the start of Loch Morlich by the track leading past Rothiemurchus Lodge. Walking past the Lodge is not a bad route to the Lairig Ghru. A bit further to walk but less up and down.

Alternatively, especially so if you have an off road kike. :) Park up near the Baird/Barrie memorial close to Whitewell in one of several off-road slots for a motor. Into Glen Eanaich where there are several ways onto the high ground.

Park at the Sugarbowl. It won't be a problem. The machines are not set up for overnight parking and the forestry have previously suggested buying 2 day tickets.

The no overnight parking is aimed at campervans / motorhomes and people camping in the car park or next to it. The forestry wish to put a stop to this.
Leaving your car to go camping or bothying far away in the hills is not an issue but it would help if this was made clear.
Possibly deliberately vague :?

Hi Rene. Another alternative is to park at the sugarbowl and do the hike in one day; this is what I did and it took about 12 hours, so there was plenty of time to do it during spring and summer daylight hours. Only having to carry a daypack obviously allows moving more easily and quickly than when carrying overnight equipment.

Some fine alternatives have been suggested but dont be put off parking at the sugarbowl car park overnight if that is your preferred option - it really isn't sn issue.
It is camping in the car park or at the roadside and all the problems that brings that is being discouraged.

All the best. :D

I left my van at the ski centre for 3 nights in June, I let them know by email beforehand, and left them details of my route, as they asked.

No worries.
