An Socach (Braemar)

An Socach (Braemar)

Postby goral85 » Tue Nov 02, 2021 10:27 am

Hi Folks,

This past Saturday (30/10) I had a failed attempt at An Socach from Glen Clunie, due to the fact that Allt Coire Fhearneasg was beyond fordable (water level + current strength).

Two questions:

1) Given the weather, is there a reason to believe that the river will become fordable by the weekend of 13-14/11?
2) Could anyone point me to a route description of An Socach (from Glen Clunie) + Beinn lutharn Mhor please?

Thank you in advance!!! :o

The water level will be almost entirely dependent on the rainfall in the previous 24-48 hours, so keep an eye on the weather in the day or two before you go back. The nearest SEPA water level report is from the Tilt, which is a bigger river, but should be a reasonable indicator - https://www2.sepa.org.uk/waterlevels/?sd=t&lc=14959

One way to get to Beinn Iutharn Mor from An Socach is to head N then drop down W to the burn confluence at NO071803, then up the NE ridge of Beinn Iutharn Mor. Alternatively, head south and contour round to Loch nan Eun. You can also return via Loch nan Eun - the going between there and the end of the Baddoch Burn track is quite rough, and it may be better to go over Carn a' Chlarsaich than round it.

We attempted to get to Glen Feshie on Friday night, alas the river crossing was too swollen. We stayed elsewhere and managed to cross the river mid morning on Saturday. River levels drop as quick as they can rise. Definitely need a couple of days of no rain in the run up to your trip. Keep an eye on MWIS a couple of days before to gauge it.

Thanks!
Please excuse a stupid question, but is there an area on the MWIS site, where a map can be accessed showing the four parts of Scotland MWIS produces the forecasts for (NW Highlands, W Highlands, SE Highlands, S Uplands). Not always completely obvious, for a novice like myself, which of the four I should be looking at with regards to a mountain I'm interested in.

Not a stupid question - there is no such map on the MWIS site, but see this thread: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=85322#p386823 For hills close to a boundary, it is worth reading both forecasts.

Unfortunately not, however near the top of each report it has a sentence detailing what the area forecast covers for example the Cairngorms National Park and Monadhliath:

MWIS wrote:Cairngorms National Park and Monadhliath. Also includes the Ben Alder area hills between Loch Ericht and Loch Laggan.

PS. The Met Office does have the desired map boundaries:

I did An Socach yesterday and the Allt Coire Fhearneasg was fordable although with the acceptance that a couple of steps were above boot height. We looked for a place to cross further up the stream but ended up crossing at the ford.

Awesome! Did you do An Socach on its own or strung more tops together?

Just on it's as per the WH route. Didn't have the time to extend unfortunately.

Excellent!

It's forecasted to rain on Friday, do you think an attempt on Saturday makes sense or should I wait till Sunday?

Cheers!

Current forecast is for the period of heaviest rain to be in the early hours of Fri morning and to pass through quite quickly, so Sat will probably be OK, but Sunday would be a safer bet.

Looks like more and more rain #facepalm.
Might make a last minute decision to do Tolmount and Tom Buidhe instead
