Succoth Car Park

Succoth Car Park

Postby Sspaterson » Mon Nov 15, 2021 8:39 pm

Hoping to get some Arrochar Alps done on Sunday. I understand the car park is £9 7am-11pm but has anyone stayed overnight in their campervan? We wouldn’t be arriving until about 9pm.

So would we have to pay £9 on the day we arrive plus £9 the next day. Or is overnight parking really frowned upon there?

We could park up elsewhere but we want an early start and are going to have to park there and pay £9 anyway so any experience or knowledge would be helpful. Thanks

No experience with Succoth but the Ardgarten car park a couple of miles further on should be fine for overnight parking and you're 5mins away in the morning. There's a quieter area round to the right if you drive past the first parking area and toilet block.

Also perfectly possible to cross the road and head along to the Cobbler path from there. Its about 1.7 miles and took me 30mins in the summer. I'm a cheapskate and I was more than happy to do that to save £9 and stick two fingers up to the moneygrabbers :D.

It's £1 per hour from 9am-6pm, free outside those hours but I'm not sure about overnight stays. As above, there's Ardgartan and other options further on.

I suspect that if you don't advertise what you're doing, then nobody will know.

Just saw this posted on Facebook, not sure if it's genuine but it's supposedly the new charges at Arrochar.

Thanks Gman but it wasn't the sign I saw. Still £1 per hour between 9am-6pm Monday to Sunday.

We did do a sneaky overnighter in the car park. Arrived late on Saturday night in pitch darkness and got a quiet discreet spot and a very peaceful night. Up with the larks and paid for a full day and had a grand day out on the hills. Back in good time in daylight for a very welcoming cuppa in the van. Car park was already filling up quickly when I wandered over to the pay station around 7am.

Anybody been to this car park recently? I'm resigned to paying 9 quid but have no idea if they take card or have Ringo etc.

Planning to be there are the weekend and don't want to have to faff about finding coins.

Details of the phone app (not used it myself): https://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/pay-mobile-parking-service
Last time I was there I did get the machine to read my card after several goes but it seemed pretty flaky.

Cool, cheers. Think this is the same thing they use in Oban etc so makes sense.

If that sign is genuine, then it's a stealth tax on day tripper hill walkers. Doing Ime and Narnain in 5 hours is doable for the fit hiker, but you wouldn't be able to relax.

But you didn't baulk at paying expensive fuel charges to get there

I would rather pay and get a parking space than the usual of trying to park on a verge next to a gate but, aye, £1 an hour is a rip-off.

The main reason for going there is Beinn Luibhean but at £9 for the day I might as well get in the Munros whilst I'm there!

I know you can do those hills from the Rest and Be Thankful or Butterbridge if you want to just do Luibhean and Ime but I've no idea what the parking areas are like at the moment down there with all the landslide stuff. Plus I think the Succoth route looks better.

We did Luibhean, Ime and Narnain from the R&BT and its a cracking route. Admittedly we got dropped off by the club bus, so can't comment on the parking situation there at the moment.

If that tariff sign is correct, then its £12 not £9. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he robbed you.

I think the sign in the photo on this thread may be at the second car park back towards the village, opposite the petrol station.

If you are really want to avoid paying, it is possible to park for free at Ardgarten and walk along the Cowal Way forestry track to join the main Cobbler path.

Luibhean/Ime/Corranich from Butterbridge is a good outing and will be a lot quieter than the Succoth route (apart from the summit of Ime, of course). I don't think you will have any problem parking at Butterbridge, but there are several alternatives back up the road towards the Rest.

Status of the RandBT road is here: https://trafficscotland.org/tsgms01/

Unfortunately the Butterbridge car park is currently a non starter, they've filled it with material for the roadworks.
Or at least that was the case earlier this year.
