Ideas For Next Year

Ideas For Next Year

Postby Mountain Mike » Tue Nov 16, 2021 9:23 pm

Hello All,
Sadly, what with pressing domestic matters, I didn't manage to get to Scotland this year. I know I'd discussed options such as Lairig Ghru, Glen Tilt etc on these pages but another option I'm looking at is Corrour Station to Spean Bridge - or vice versa - with an overnight at the Lairig Leacach bothy.
Looks straightforward on the map. Does anyone know it? How "do-able" is it in bad(summer)weather?

Thanks in advance.

It's pretty straightforward - most of it is Land Rover track or tarmac. The bits that aren't could be boggy after rain, but there aren't any river crossing hazards. It's not that far - you'll probably only be walking for about 4 hours a day.

Thanks for that. I notice on the map that there are two paths either side of the river in the Lairig Leacach. I'd be interested to know if there is much difference in them.

West side is a reasonably decent bit of singletrack. The east side is one of those barely there, linear bogs much beloved by OS mapmakers having a bad day and wishing to take it out on unsuspecting future hikers.

Here's a report and route map from March 2018. Staying at Staoineag Bothy instead of Lairig Leacach.

It's a great area and a fine walk - all the best. :D

As jmarkb mentioned it's a pretty straight forward route, mostly on landrover tracks. the first section leaving Corrour Station is boggy unless you take the longer tracked route.

I'd be tempted to take a detour and spend the night in Staoineag Bothy instead of Lairig Leacach as it's a bigger bothy. The stepping stones outside Staoineag Bothy are covered when the river is in spate, but you can retrace your steps and walk back to the bridge near Loch Treig.

Is that the one that starts from the Ossian Youth Hostel?

That's the one yes. The boggy path meets up with new track when it crosses the railway at NN 341 681.

That could sit well with a night in the hostel after travelling in by train
