Mirages

Mirages

I don't think I've even seen this in Scotland before - a product of the very strong temperature inversion yesterday.
Superior mirages of the Galloway hills as seen from Cruach Ardrain.

Nothing I could see this weekend as the inversion layer in the NW was around 400m.
However from a few years ago. Cairngorms from Creag Meagaidh.

Those are amazing, this kind of thing always fascinates me. And reminds me of that legendary thread that asked if you can see Norway from the Cairngorms… :o

These are very impressive. I have never seen a mirage like this, despite spending years in the far north. I did see mirages in the desert of Saudi Arabia but that is more like an optical illusion, seeing hills, dunes and sandstone stumps apparently floating in the air. One thing I once saw in Scotland, off the west coast was a cloud formation which looked exactly like the Cuillin of Skye. I was so taken in by it that I thought I was way off course - I was far too far north to see Skye from such an angle, but there it was, or seemed to be. Eventually the apparent Cuillin range broke up and dissipated away like a dream...

Thankyou, and thanks to Mark for bringing up an interesting subject.

As a seafarer you must have seen a few I'd have thought? Whilst hanging round Inverie last Sunday I captured one of the Calmac ferries and its distorted hull.
