When I did this ridge (in 1977) the gendarme was still there. I bypassed it by abseiling down Nicholson’s chimney. The following year I approached the gendarme from the other side and got round it, having been told where the holds were. I gather that when descending the ridge now, most people still abseil down the chimney. What was left after the gendarme collapsed? Asking for a friend!
