Snow on Ben Cruachan?

Snow on Ben Cruachan?

Postby Lightfoot2017 » Fri Jan 14, 2022 10:28 am

Is anyone able to say what the conditions are like on Ben Cruachan and Stob Diamh at the moment?

I'm thinking of taking a wander up there this weekend, but I'm not a fan of the white stuff. :(

Grateful, as ever, for any advice. Thanks.

LF.

You'll get a decent idea between the webcams looking at Ben More and Glencoe. Every chance there will be icy sections up there, a judgement call as ever.

Most likely still some patches, hard to say if they will be avoidable, or if they will will be frozen or not.

If I recall correctly, there is a little rocky step on the ridge E of the main summit which can be awkward in winter conditions. Also beware of heading directly between Stob Dearg and the Meall Cunail col (Bealach an Lochain) - there is an area of slabs which are tricky if wet or icy or under thin snow cover.

The SAIS website for Glencoe will give you a good idea of what to expect. Looks like any remaining snow will be patchy :(

A lot of the snow that was on Ben More has disappeared, and the Glencoe area is similar, but the cameras don't show everything, and the norther sides of slopes will still have a fair bit, so you'd need to just check it out when you get there and make a judgement.

Ben Cruachan is approached from the southern side, so there's probably not a huge amount, but take care. I'd agree with jmarkb - those slabs will be more of a problem with a thin layer of snow/ice than under a foot of snow. :)

Yesterday (14th Jan 2022) the Buchaile was in mist with small patches of snow in gullies, so likely your chosen hill may be similar; ice may remain on paths so take crampons just in case. And a helmet in case you slip and smack your brainbox on a rock.
