Testing Tops

Testing Tops

Postby Paul Webster » Wed Jan 26, 2022 2:04 pm

No, I'm afraid it's not an account of an ascent of the Basteir Tooth and others. It's a request for help!

We've had alot of requests over the years to include bagging lists for Munro Tops. The reason we didn't have them is that we didn't want to overcomplicate the tagging of reports etc. for the majority who are not as interested in the Tops. However someone had suggested having a Tops that you could 'opt-in' to just for bagging map purposes.

I'm now working on including the Tops on this basis.

For now, I've set up a Munros Tops bagging map. You can access it via the link below, and update your Tops via the 'Update' link above the map:
https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/tops.php?mode=tmap

At the moment it is only found though this forum link. I've mapped all the Tops onto their parent Munros in our existing database. If you spot any errors - Tops connected to the wrong Munros - when updating then let me know here.

The idea is that we will show the Tops on the relevant Munro pages, but only if you have opted in to being interested in them.

A was never among the people who thought this was needed, but I'm going to go and fill it in now. Not sure what that says about me

Would Sgurr Dearg in the Cuillin be counted as a top?

Sgurr Dearg is a deleted top, apparently - don't know what it did wrong...

Will it be possible to see Tops on the all hills map, or on a Munros+Tops map? They look a bit lonely all alone.

I think what may work would be if we make it so that the Tops map has the parent Munros marked on it as well in some way, rather than changing the other maps. Make sense?

Nice work - thanks for doing that!

A couple of observations as I filled it in:

Tom na Sroine is a subsidiary top of Aonach Mor not Binnein Mor

The maths behind the percentage readout currently doesn't add up. Mine says 'You have climbed 188 Tops out of 226 - 98.23% complete'- should be 83%

Nice one Paul, I'm not an active top bagger at the moment but still have a wee record of the ones I've done.

Is there any chance of having a bagging tick when the hills are sorted in alphabetical order?

I never kept a record of tops, but R did, so I went in his computer and see I still need 47, which is a bit of a tall order, as the list of "Not Dones" contains the Basteir Tooth.

Have tried putting in A'Choineach and clicked the link. Got a lovely map with lots of red balloons (Aaaargh) clicked A' Choineach and then update and got a list of hills that don't include A' Choineach (nor its parent, which I think is Bynack Mor. What am I doing wrong?

I always find the update list confusing - I prefer when I can do it hill by hill! But the area defaults to Argyll, so you have to change it in the drop down thing to Cairngorms or whatever you want it to be.

The munro tops map will be a great addition to the site.

Tom Dubh is linked to Monadh Mor but I think it is a subsidiary top of Braeriach. Cheers.
