Testing Tops

Re: Testing Tops

Postby Paul Webster » Thu Jan 27, 2022 10:12 am

Thanks all.

Tom Dubh is linked to Monadh Mor but I think it is a subsidiary top of Braeriach. Cheers.

I thought that too, managed to convince myself otherwise, now looked again and am sure you are right. Changed it over.

Is there any chance of having a bagging tick when the hills are sorted in alphabetical order?

I did have it with just alphabetical order but with the Tops think it's easier to find by having them listed under parent Munros. So it's parent Munros in alphabetical, and then tops under, also from A-Z.

Tom na Sroine is a subsidiary top of Aonach Mor not Binnein Mor

The maths behind the percentage readout currently doesn't add up. Mine says 'You have climbed 188 Tops out of 226 - 98.23% complete'- should be 83%

Cheers, both these fixed.

I always find the update list confusing - I prefer when I can do it hill by hill!

I intend making it so the relevant tops appear on each Munro page (and probably can be ticked there). Just need to sort out an intuitive way of letting people 'turn Tops on' rather than having them there by default and confusing newbies (or cluttering for those who don't care).

That was meant as sympathy with Sgurr's confusion rather than a complaint to you :D But thanks for the information - it does all sound sensible.

This is great, as I had been tracking the Tops as I did the Munro’s (but never actually checking an updated list or alterations) originally on a Bartholomew’s Munro map and then the updated Collins version (which in itself is outdated looking at your list).

I am always looking at the Tops for the Munros I had still to do, so this will make it so much easier to identify them. Thanks

I thought Tom Dubh used to be a Top of Braeriach but was recently reclassified as a Top of Monadh Mor? It's showing that way on my Hill Lists app. I intended to bag it from Monadh Mor, but it seemed a long way when I already had a long walk out back to camp at the Falls of Dee (and I'm not really bagging Tops anyway, just ticking them off when I do them!).

The SMC and DoBIH disagree on this - SMC say Monadh Mor in the latest list (in the 2021 Munros guidebook), while DoBIH prefer Braeriach. This may be down to the definition of parent hill, which is not as straightforward or unambiguous as it might appear - see Chapter 2 of the Humps book http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/humps_ebook_release_1_1_0c.pdf for the gory details.

Are you using the update link, and pressing 'Submit hills climbed' when you've ticked them? Should work the same as for the other lists... :?

Tom Dubh - I think in DoBH it is a top of Monadh Mor. But having stared at the map for ages (and remembering that it was always considered to be of Braeriach) I can't see why, as there is less descent from it when heading towards Braeriach. So I think the change requested by sunset tripper was correct.

Happy for someone to explain why it should be Monadh Mor.

I always thought Tom Dubh belonged to Braeriach, though there are four Munroes closer. I took this photo of it, sarcastically for a top-bagger. I'm not even sure I got it in the picture, from the slope of Carn na Criche about 10 years ago. I think it's the mess to the left of the lochan.

I know it has a reputation as being one of the most obscure tops but it is actually ascended on the WH route to Monadh Mor. The highest bealach still seems to be with Braeriach on latest maps though.

It's going to really annoy me how close I was to some of these, isn't it?

My first two Scottish 3000 footers ever were Cairn Lochan and Stob Coire an t-Sneachda, on a winter skills course. I didn't realise they were so 'baggable' at the time!

DoBIH lists both parent Munro for Munro Tops (as per SMC list) and also parent Marilyn. There are lots of cases where these are not the same (because not all Munros are Marilyns), but that's not the reason for the discrepancy in this case.

I don't know what the SMC criteria might be (if any) - closest higher contour that encloses a single Munro? Shortest Naismith time?
