Blank maps
Blank maps
by KC Pendragon » Sat Feb 12, 2022 8:28 am
Morning all. My walkhighland maps have been blank on my iPad for the past few days, but are visible on my phone. Being technologically challenged, I’m not sure what the reason may be. Any suggestions please? Thanks.

Have you tried turning it off and turning it back on again?

Haha, I have! That is the extent of my tech knowledge, but sadly not a fix this time.

You need to do a hard refresh of the webpage when you are on it, to clear the empty or corrupted info stored on your device. I've never owned an ipad so don't know how this is done. On Chrome (for example) it's Control-F5.

Clearly not just a prob for Pendragon - my iPhone similarly afflicted with blank maps having previously shown them without problem.
Yes, I have tried turning phone off and on again.
Any bright ideas from the tech savvy ( no don’t suggest not having an iPhone!)

Its because Safari is throwing an error with some of the javascript. Cache clear and reload resolves.

‘Clearing history’ in Safari sorted it - but not surprisingly in helpfully did clear lots of history!
Not sure if there was a less destructive way to sort this but it’s done, thanks for the guidance

Yes, clearing cache would have been enough but I don't think IOS lets you just do that (fine on macOS)

It's a bit of an odd mystery as there have been no code changes in any of that javascript - so when you clear the cache (history in this case by the sound of it), you get the exactly same file stored again on your iphone, but it does seem to fix it for everyone.

On a similar note, my iPhone threw a tantrum and I've lost all my list of phone contacts. Anyone know if these are recoverable?

He had bought a large map representing the sea,
Without the least vestige of land:
And the crew were much pleased when they found it to be
A map they could all understand.
"What's the good of Mercator's North Poles and Equators,
Tropics, Zones, and Meridian Lines?"
So the Bellman would cry: and the crew would reply
"They are merely conventional signs!
"Other maps are such shapes, with their islands and capes!
But we've got our brave Captain to thank
(So the crew would protest) "that he's bought us the best—
A perfect and absolute blank!"

You should be able to retrieve contacts if they are set to back-up to iCloud. Log on to iCloud.com (has to be on an iPad or computer not your iPhone), click on account settings and there should be an option to retrieve contacts.
