Nearly got there

Nearly got there

Postby Bastonjock » Wed Mar 23, 2022 7:43 pm

Well I had my first attempt at bagging a Corbin today, namely Beinn Carbh at argour ,I set off at 8.30 and decided if I did not achieve my goal by 2.30 I would turn around .I was wanting to find out my limits and levels of fitness. I was solo and I carry an Acr plb ,I left my route with my son and off I went ,I got too 902 meters before I turned back ,my reasons for turning back were , I was feeling it physically ,my ,,64 year old legs were running out of juice , and the main one was that I did not want to descend in the dark ,I do have a head torch
I learned a lot from the ascent ,such as don't rely on your phone as your main navigation device
On the positive side ,I got back down safely and thoroughly enjoyed it

No wonder you felt knackered if you got to 902m on a 885m hill!

Looks like it was a good day out and it's great to know where you are at fitness wise. I quite like the navigation apps on phones, especially in difficult conditions, but still enjoy reading an old school map. For me I get a much better sense of where I am in relation to the mountains around me and the terain up ahead - and I just really like maps.

I hope your next adventure is more of a success.

I too turned back before the summit on this very rugged hill. That was due to weather - but all the same I found the ascent and the terrain much more tougher than many Munros. Well done!

I'm the same, just back from town to pick up the OS map that covers the north half of the speyside way. Doubt I will need it but feel absolutely exposed without a map.

Me as well. I much prefer a proper OS map and is my default. I enjoy the much broader context that you get with a real map.

At least mentally, there's not much harder than a solitary sea level Corbett. Your head is giving you 'it's just a Corbett', while the legs are happily informing you it's two Tarmachan's worth. Plus there's not usually any other summits nearby to at least make use of the 900m slog. Should be a category on their own....'The F****rs' maybe :D.

I guess the Altimeter on my watch is not very accurate
Today I kept it simple and went for a walk on the flat at Ardtornish ,16k
I'm eyeing up another attempt at bagging my first Corbett tomorrow ,I've got two compases and a is map this time ,I did not have the is map last time
Stob Coire Chearcail , I've read the wh reports that say this is more of a beginner Corbett

Enjoy tomorrow Bastonjack.
Stob Coire a Chearcaill is another fine hill but a lot less rugged than Garbh Bheinn and I'm sure you'll reach the summit and bask in your achievement.

Garbh Bheinn however is a fabulous peak - build up your stamina and confidence and return to it on a fine day with plenty of daylight - you are in for a treat.
One of my favourite Corbetts so far for sure!

Is it maybe measuring total ascent? Goatfell is only 874m, but will measure over 920m of ascent from sea level.
