Luss parking query

Luss parking query

Postby denfinella » Fri Apr 22, 2022 8:10 pm

Thinking about heading to Luss for a walk this weekend. It's several years since the last visit, and the first time I've driven there in summer (the car park used to be free in winter).

Anyway, question is - do the ticket machines accept cards / notes / coins, and if the latter two, how much and do they give change?

I'm hoping it shouldn't be too difficult to get a space at this relatively early time of year.

The picture in this article looks like the recently added Luss South car park takes cards. It also looks like it costs £1/hour! https://www.seelochlomond.co.uk/discover/luss#:~:text=Parking%20in%20Luss&text=The%20car%20park%2C%20built%20and,parking%20and%20no%20motorhomes/campervans.
I couldn't find any info on the one I've parked at before but hopefully someone knows

I was on the Luss hills Easter Monday, the parking is indeed now £1 per hour with no 'all day' rate but you can at least pay when you leave so don't have to guesstimate how long you'll be. Oh, and they generously grant a 10 minute grace period.

The machines take cards and coins, I can't say as I noticed if they take notes. I paid by card but if my recollection is correct from last time I paid cash change isn't a thing there (could be wrong on that though).

Given it was a bank holiday I was surprised how quiet it was. I arrived just before 9am to a deserted car park and even when I returned around 3.30 there were plenty of spaces. Perhaps the charges are putting folk off? Didn't see another soul on my route (Beinn Eich/Doune Hill) and even though I'd opted for Luss in the hope of avoiding bank holiday crowds I wasn't really expecting to have the place to myself. Was a nice surprise despite the costly parking.

Which one is paid? We’ve parked at the reservoir and in Glen Douglas reasonably recently with no sign of charges.

Thanks all.

Update - the council-owned north car park and the estate-owned are indeed both now £1/hr with no all day rate (ouch). Parking in the village is for residents / permit holders only. However, there is currently still a reasonable stretch of unrestricted, free parking immediately south of the southern car park.

WeeHills - we did Beinn Eich & Doune Hill too and would agree it was surprisingly quiet. We didn't see anyone else for the entire day after the more popular Beinn Dubh route had turned off.

prog99 - are you thinking of somewhere else?

Here’s where we parked. Are both now getting charged?
NS 31000 98700 For glen douglas(last summer)
NS 27539 90432 For the reservoir approach.(autumn 2020)

Ah - gotcha. Neither Glen Douglas nor a reservoir rang any bells for me around Luss, so I thought you were thinking of somewhere else - but I can see them on a map now! I guess they're still free but can't say definitively as we were at Luss village.

There is lay-by just North of Luss, no more than 1 km. plenty of spaces- no charge. Only real gripe is the walk back to it after you have been on the hill
