Carnach Bridge (Knoydart)

The distance upstream depends on how wet it is, but likely to be a fair way. It's a wide, deep river.

Had a closer look at the weather and it looks actually not as bad as i though first. Will keep and eye on it and if its too high when i arrive there I'll either stay a night at the bothy or return to glenfinnan and think about how to reroute, possibly via Mallaig and the ferry to Inverie.
How far upstream is the spot where its easier and safer to cross?

The simple reroute to avoid fording the Carnach is to head N from Glendessary to Glen Kingie, turn W then head over the stalkers path to the west end of Loch Quoich. About 2.5km west along the lochside connects with the stalkers path over Mam Unndalain to Barrisdale.

Keek - how was Carnach? I'm heading up there now though walking in the other direction from Kinlochewe to Glenfinnan. Hoping to cross at carnach. thanks!Laura

If your coming south from barisdale and Glen/Mam Unndalaine try and cross where the glen opens up, grid NM 884 973 ish, it's a 4x4 Ford and the carnoch is wide and shallow there in the right conditions,

Theres a LR/4x4 track on the south bank. Follow that track and when it turns (a mile or so downstream) to ford the river again back to the north bank, leave it and bare left to contour the base of the hills, theres actually a faint path (its basically hard against the hill base and impossible to see if your not on it) all the way to the Eilean Tioram point & sourlies bothy. Your well away from the river and dont need to cross that nasty boggy bit that you used to when you crossed to sourlies from the old bridge at carnoch

We did it! Very lucky the river was shallow so after a long marsh crossing we were able to ford it nae bother. Even rescued a salmon that had marooned itself in the shallows. Definitely wouldn't be possible if the river was in spate... or the tide was in.
