It says ‘south of Inverness’ in the bbc Scotland page I just read.

I wouldn't worry about it. Reminds me of whenever my Mum phones me and asks where I'm hiking, if it's the West Highlands I'm near Fort William, if I'm in the East Highlands I'm near Aviemore and if I'm up in the North West Highlands, I'm near Ullapool. She doesn't know where anywhere else is. :lol:

Most folk in Scotland would probably be hard pushed to tell you where anywhere is. I just tell dad (who lives up here) I was up a hill which satisfies him.

Dalwhinnie, south of Inverness. It was discussed at great length a few months ago.

I live in Inverness and would consider Dalwhinnie nearby. It's only an hour away.

I agree, straight up/down the A9 or the main railway line.

Is it that crossing that Network Rail wanted to prevent walkers/cyclists using which prompted a fair bit of discussion here?

@Al78, I think it's this news story https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp01y5y5mn1o
It's about the row over the level crossing at Dalwhinnie.

:lol: aye, I was listening to that report and thought it was a weird description. Almost equidistant between Perth and Inverness and close to neither. Either they don't think the audience knows Scotland well, or they don't.

Be interesting to know what percentage of the Scottish population could pick out Dalwhinnei on a map

It is of course a matter of perception and depends on how much you travel. A few of my colleagues didn't want to travel from Glasgow to Perth for a meeting recently because Perth is such a "long journey" to get to.

I suspect committed hillwalkers take a more long distance view of travel than would be the case for most of the population. Even so, I think a 55mile trip is pushing the definition of "near".

It's much like 'an oil rig north-east of Aberdeen'. Which, on investigation, often turns out to be east of Shetland, some 250 miles from Aberdeen, and nearer north than north-east.

The reporter possibly thinks that's the closest place his target audience might have heard of. :D
