The reporter possibly thinks that's the closest place his target audience might have heard of.
As in the closest place with a professional football team named after its home town ("somewhere between Ross County and St. Johnstone"). So the target audience might just have heard of it.
Also reminds me of the BBC saying the sculptor Henry Moore was from Wakefield, while a museum in Madrid I visited described him as "Henry Moore de Castleford, Inglaterra". Guess which one was correct?
