Sgùrr nan Coireachan, Garbh Chioch Mhòr and Sgùrr na Cìche. Clockwise or anti-clockwise?

I did it anticlockwise as per WH route and found it a great walk. I imagine the ridge would be good either way, but I'm happy I descended from Sgurr na Ciche to the glen, not sure I would have preferred a direct ascent that way. Ascent from near Loch Arkaig to Sgurr nan Coireachan was fine, as I recall. But I guess it would also be worth hearing the opinion from someone who's done it the other way round. Different people will have their own preferences regarding long glen walk in vs long glen walk back. The final assault on Sgurr na Ciche after Garbh Chioch Mhor was a classic, though.

Thanks! Walking these 3 on Saturday, prefer a steep ascent to a steep descent - any thoughts?

If you use the regular WH route, there's a steep gully descent coming back down from Sgurr na Ciche to the glen, but if you reversed the route you'd have a longer, pretty steep descent down the ridge from Sgurr nan Coireachan. It was back in 2016, but as a recall the steep gully was rougher than the Coireachan ridge. As I said, I enjoyed the ridge ascent and wouldn't have fancied the rough gully in ascent. It was quite an arduous descent but well manageable and bearable. Someone else's preference may be different, hope this helps.

If you can't decide maybe take wind direction into account on Saturday. North/North westly might make clockwise slightly better?

wind direction should be the main factor - so you enjoy the ridge walk with wind / weather behind you, rather then battling into the elements

Our group of 5 walked up glen and took gully up to foot of Sgurr na Ciche - i actually really enjoyed this bit and thought much better to be going up rather than down - personally i like rocky stuff though

then had excellent high ridge walk following low dry stane dyke most of the way back towards start and less of a long trudge back to the car when down into glen.

I did it clockwise, as the wind that day was to be at our backs, still a long walk in/out regardless of direction

Done the circuit 3 times. Always clockwise. Added Sgurr Mor twice as well.

I did Sgùrr na Cìche first, enjoyed being up on the ridge walking back towards the car and then adding Sgurr Mor at the end, out via Glen Kingie. 8)

I have done the 3 of them twice and both times clockwise. No particular reason, however ascending the gully up Sgurr na Ciche is probably easier.

Thanks for your thoughts - ended up opting for anti-clockwise, mainly to enjoy the vista looking out to the west, with a promising forecast for cloud free summits. The gully was no problem in descent, actually quite enjoyable. A lovely walk which I’ll do again the other way at some point.

Thanks! Opted for anti-clockwise this time, but definitely be back to walk the other way. The last few miles are certainly a trudge but a braw walk
