Waterproof shoes necessary for Moray Coast Trail?

Waterproof shoes necessary for Moray Coast Trail?

Postby BlueNo4 » Sat May 28, 2022 3:01 am

Hi there,

In anticipation of walking some or all of the Moray Coast Trail next month, I'm wondering about footwear.

I have decent hiking and walking shoes, but nothing waterproof. To what extent would you say that's necessary?

Thanks very much,

If you mean in terms of terrain rather than weather, the Moray Coast Trail is generally on pretty good ground - pavements, good tracks, bits of forestry trails ... I did a lot of it in trainers for comfort.

The necessity of waterproof footwear depends on 2 things:
1. how lucky you are with the weather - do it during a prolonged dry spell and your feet won't get wet anyway. This clearly isn't guaranteed in Scotland
2. how willing you are to put up with it if your feet do get wet - some people find that waterproof boots ultimately just delay the inevitable and can be difficult to dry out so they prepare themselves for wet feet.

Perhaps a bit "out of the box" but had you considered waterproof socks?
To either wear on a really wet day OR wear a day after your footwear gets soaked so that things get to dry out a bit but your feet stay toasty.

Nah, I've walked most of it with trainers.
