France GR5

Hi

Can anyone suggest an app for walking in France? In September I'm walking for a month along the GR5 and variations.

I'm not a great fan of Outdoor Active and I think it's expensive. I also can't find an app that uses Open Maps that has foot paths marked on.

thanks Laura

Have a look at the viewranger replacement thread in the gear and equipment forum. There are a few apps to try.

I'm guessing that you meant to say "openstreetmaps?"
To second your first response (if that makes sense) the Viewranger replacement thread does mention a good number of apps, some of which use the openstreetmaps.
In direct response to your question though I personally like the full version of Alpinequest.
That app has them all plus France specific maps.
For a relatively cheap one off price. £8.99 I seem to recall.
If you want some example screenshots give us a shout.

As an alternative to an app, the topoguides published for all the GRs are comprehensive and easy to carry. Here are the GR5 ones:

Be very careful using Open Street Map. Its fine for poking around on your computer and researching an area to get clues about paths that may not be marked on OS maps but it otherwise it's rubbish. Some rights of way and established paths marked on OS dont even show up not to mention the lack of surface features.

The Cicerone guide for the GR5 and the a Map for the Massif de la Vanoise GR55 TOP75 one of the very fine Variants I found useful for the sections of long route that we plugged into.....and don't miss out on the Mercantour section.
Didn't use the Grande Randonnee Topo guides for GR5 but we did find them very useful for Corsica.

If you're just looking for maps, they're available for free online from https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/carte.

These 2 sites are quite good for research but there i'd advise buying the "topoguides" guide books or the maps to be honest.

I have always used gr-infos.com.
Not an app but they have details and maps and downloadable gpx for use in apps or GPS.
