Lekking
“[Lekking] is a moving gathering of males to attract females from the surrounding area.

Reminds me of the weekends of my distant youth.

Used to see that on our farm in the days before the War On Insects. IIRC in your hair but not THAT sort of midge.

Good to see.

Reminds me why I don't camp in the summer.

Thankfully the non-biting sort. Still doesn't make them any more pleasant. Same most summers on the trails around Loch Leven, out in their thousands. Not pleasant cycling through cloud after cloud of them, buff over the mouth and glasses for the eyes a necessity. Clothes caked in tiny wing-ed carcasses by the end of ride.

There is no wilderness in Scotland. All of it has been altered or managed by mankind at some point in history or modern times. If the Scottish highlands were a true wilderness, it would look a lot different to the way it looks today.
