Mobile app for importing .gpx files onto OS background

Mobile app for importing .gpx files onto OS background

Postby denfinella » Tue Aug 02, 2022 2:25 am

As in the title - I'm looking for a phone GPS app which:

1. allows you to import (not just draw) your own .gpx files / routes
2. can display them on an OS 1:25000 background
3. shows your position

So far I can't find anything that fulfills all three. The OS Maps app does 2+3 if you pay for mapping / use the codes from newer paper maps, but doesn't allow you to import a .gpx file. Several free apps do 1+3, but don't offer the OS map background. Walkhighlands does 2+3, or 1+2 rather clunkily, but not all 3 at the same time.

I would expect any such app would have a fee, but hopefully it would be much cheaper than buying a dedicated GPS device.

I use paper maps as my primary navigation aid, so I'm not worried about potential safety issues with batteries failing etc. Adding in the GPS element is really just out of curiosity - hence not wanting to spend much.

Any ideas?

The outdoor active app does all three - you need to subscribe for some features/offline map useage.

You can definitely import gpx files, it shows your position and it provides OS maps to that scale (you also have the choice of other map types).

Memory map does all of this. You need to pay for the maps either one off or as a subscription.

Locus Pro ticks all 3 boxes, but isn't currently available on iOS Apple.

Thanks everyone, that's a big help. (Is Outdoor Active the app that replaced Viewranger?)

Yes, you could always try out the one month trial. I used it to get the Harvey’s maps for Ireland and then cancelled it. I did feedback my thoughts on the app which were broadly in line with other comments.

The OS Maps app does let you import gpx files - I do so before every weekend as a tertiary backup nav solution - not sure if you are talking iPhone or Android, but at least on iPhone, I can click on a GPX link (such as those from Walkhighlands), download it and then open it (selecting OS Maps as the app to open it in) then in OS Maps, it lets me name it, etc before saving it and and download offline mapping for the route - selecting the route whilst in the area will also show you where you are (and you can also follow the route, though I've never used it that way).

As you mentioned, there is a subscription fee, but it's under £30 a year which I feel is a reasonable fee for such a useful app.

I use Backcountry Navigator Pro on Android and it allows me to do all three for a relatively cheap one off fee.
BUT the resolution isnt quite as good as more expensive options when zoomed in.
I find it adequate though

So it does! That's brilliant because I already have that app installed due to the codes on some of my newer paper maps. Would never have thought of opening it directly from the .gpx file, so thanks for the pointer.
