Pronunciation of town and village names

Some things get poshed up. Strathaven's in the country, so still pronounced Straven. Rutherglen was Ruglen, but is urban and now almost always gets the full word. It irritates me when people from one of the spams in Eaglesham, properly pronounced Eaglesum, says Eagle-sham.

BBC caused some of this in Scotland. In England, Daventry was pronounced Daintree, till the Beeb started saying it in full, like Coventry. Lord Reith, when told his organisation was getting it wrong, said the correct pronounciation was entirely a matter for the BBC.
