Liathach for the feint hearted

Liathach for the feint hearted

Postby Hills4dogs » Sun May 05, 2024 4:42 pm

Hi was wondering what the routes up and down to the two Munros on Liathach are like? I'm not good with edges  so there is no way I want to do the ridge, but was wondering how the two individual Munros are if I just do them separately? :-D
Thanks

Steep paths up both of them, good in places eroded in others.
Spidean a' Choire Leith is an out and back over a munro top from where the path joins the ridge but no scrambling.

There is a fairly narrow section shortly after the path joins the ridge at the east end, but there is no technical difficulty involved.

This is a really good walk report from Black Panther on the westerly munro. I was planning to add on after Beinn Alligin.

There is also a direct route to Mullach an Rathain which starts(according to a measure I've just done on OS maps) on the A896 about 870m east of the junction to Torridon village.

The path is marked on the OS map and is clear on Google maps too. There is a small pull in very close on the opposide of the road,

I haven't waked in Torridon for a few years but when I descended from Liathach the path was good with no exposure at all.

Mentioned it in passing. It’s the usual descent doing an east west traverse of the ridge. Parking can sometimes be an issue around it .

Prior to doing these two Munros last year I was very nervous about them.
But if memory serves me correctly there is a non exposed by pass path all the way until you make the choice of over the top or the precipitous by pass path.
I used the over the top route and didn’t find it difficult at all , see photos below. There is absolutely no way I’d use the path around the last peak.
First photo shows the by pass path going off to the left and the route over the top.
Second photo is a look back to the by pass path coming around.

Having said the above I appreciate everyone’s perception of exposure is not the same.

Those photos give a useful illustration of the pinnacle. I am hoping to do the Liathach ridge in a coupld of weeks and whilst a photo is not the same as standing there in real time, that route over the pinnacle doesn't look difficult, it looks like a bigger version of the pinnacle on the Crib Goch ridge which wasn't a problem at all.

I would say that there isn't much to choose grade-wise between the easiest line over Am Fasarinen (i.e. not the low-level bypass) which is low in Grade 2 and the Crib Goch pinnacles, which are quite hard/exposed for Grade 1.

That gives me more confidence. I want to try the Liathach ridge but have been feeling a bit anxious over its grade 2 rating. If it is at the bottom end of grade 2 I feel more comfortable about giving it a go, only in fair weather though.

A hike along Beinn Alligin is a must-do! I hiked here as well, and really enjoyed it!
