Hike suggestion 6-8 days

Hike suggestion 6-8 days

Postby milominderbinder » Wed Aug 03, 2011 12:54 am

Hi guys,

I am making my first visit to the highlands end of September. Would like to do some hiking and wild camping, have decent experience of long distance walking in the Himalayas.

My initial plan was to go to Fort William, spend a day on Ben Nevis and then walk to Inverness along the Great Glen Way. I am really mostly looking to do some climbing, lots of walking and mostly just be far away from people! Is the Great Glen way what I'm looking for? Can anyone suggest a wild walk, maybe in the Northwestern Highlands which would fit the same schedule (reaching Inverness/ Fort William on 21st September evening, leaving 30th September morning)? I don't have a car and will need food at least every couple of days.

Thanks!

The Great Glen Way is not what you want if you want to get away from people into some wild country. You could walk from Fort William (or better still get the train to Glenfinnan) and then head north from there to Strachan, down Glen Dessary, across Knoydart to Barrisdale, along to Kinlochhourn, then over to Sheil Bridge (4 days). From there you could continue further north or you could have a wander down Glen Affric. Or get the ferry from Glenelg across to Skye. There are dozens of Munros along the way that you could pick off if you have lots of energy.Have fun!

Whay not do the Skye Trail. You can get a bus from Fort William to Portree and then on the start of the walk. Wild camping on the Trotternish ridge is fab and you could add walking from Broadford to Kylerhea and catching the ferry over to Glenelg then walk on to Sheil Bridge to catch the bus back to Fort William if you have time.

I don't think the GGW is what you are looking for' I've just done it, you will pass many others doing it, its a bit boring, with at least half of the route going through forests, and no climbing really.
I have done a few LD treks....

Thanks everyone!

Looking closely at all the routes you've mentioned, GGW is definitely out of the picture I think.
