Good suggestions for "kid friendly" Munros?

Good suggestions for "kid friendly" Munros?

Postby Marag » Thu Aug 27, 2009 1:04 pm

Hi All,
I'm just back from climbing Cairngorm with the kids and we had a great day out!
They are now keen to climb another and I am keen to find opinions as to which hills two 6 year olds and a 10 year old will enjoy climbing.
Any thoughts?
Marags.
PS we're going to buy the lady in blue proper boots

Schiehallion? Was my 1st munro on foot when I was 8, all I can remember is how bouldery it was on top and how there were SO MANY false summits.

Maybe Ben Vrackie near Pitlochry? But then the news that it is only a measly Corbett might not go down to well with the kids.

Also, Meall Chuaich is pretty staightforward, and stuff around Glenshee like Carn Aosda and Glas Maol, not too strenuous. I also did all these when very young and strangely don't remember them being quite as hard as Schiehallion.

Ben Nevis? Straightforward enough in good weather, if a bit of a climb.

Hi Marag,
I have a 6 and an 8yo and can concur that the Cairnwell Trio is a fine start, we have also done Ben Wyvis although that may be too far away. We also climbed Schiehallion this summer, my 8yo and myself thought it was OK but the 6yo and wife hated it. Stuart my 6yo found that his legs were too small to get any rythm walking over the boulders and therefore each step became a stop and it ended up taking ages and not very pleasant for any of us.
In my opinion I would not get hung up on Munro's as we have had better, longer and happier days doing Corbetts with a horseshoe or linked trail of several being the favoured option.
Good luck anyway.

Beinn Ghlas from the Lawers visitor centre might be worth considering

Ben na Lap! And you get the adventure of a train journey! And you can sip pints of real ale (or OJ for the kids) whilst waiting for the train!

Don't rely on the Corrour station cafe being open. SYHA has taken on the lease of the building but noone seems to know quite what their plans are for it.

I was hoping for some advice to kid friendly munros too, but thus far had no replies to my previous post!

I was hoping to try Alligin or Beinn Eighe, my little ones are not so little any more (pushing 14 and 11)
and would be up for a bit of a scramble. Any thoughts?

I was beginning to wonder if any one on here walked with kids........
