Walking forum's...How loyal are you?

Postby mountainstar » Sun Dec 04, 2011 8:06 pm

How loyal (for want of a better word) are you to any particular walking forum?
And any reasons for your loyalty or not?
I visit and post on 3….WalkHighlands, OutdoorsMagic & Scottish Hills, but mostly nowadays on WH, mainly because of going to several meets over the last 2 years, and obviously now know more people on here that any of the others.
Before that I was on OM a lot more, but never went on any meets with them.
I know of several WH members who cross over, but also it seems many who never or at least don’t seem to ever go over to “the other side”
Just thought it would be interesting to hear others views on this?

Use those 3 as well ,munro magic is good for more corbett routes but the forum is pretty quiet, not been on scottish hills that long so still finding my way about that one, walk highlands is the best i think ,good forums and an easy to use site even for someone with limited computer skills like me

Ooh let the other-forum bashing begin..... (hopefully not)

I stick to WH alone, I'm not that bothered about several forums, I couldn't keep up. :( I tried SH, and spent a few years on MunroMagic, I met a LOT of people through that. But a couple years ago it all blew up among the forum members, people moved onto different things and different places. And paying a tenner doesn't cut it for me. Everybody left so I had no personal ties.

Wouldn't say I'm especially loyal to WH, met a big bunch at the Wales meet but thats nearly it.

I am a member of three hill-related forums.
I joined my first forum, back in 2002 -UK Climbing.
I stopped posting there, and have rarely visited UKC in recent years, as I got fed up of the almost constant bickering there. In 2007, I joined Scottish Hills. In 2009, I joined Walk Highlands.

I currently use both Scottish Hills and Walk Highlands, as do many others.
To date, I have definitely been most prolific on Scottish Hills.
I think both of the above sites have their strengths and weaknesses e.g.
Fantastic back catalogue of trip reports & separate fora for Munro, Corbett, Graham etc. - Scottish Hills
Ability to add routes to reports, up-to-date bug-free site, etc. - Walk Highlands

Scottish Hills is less formal than Walk Highlands. Justifiably so, as Walk Highlands is run as a business.
Both sites also have associated meets. I've attended both and found both good.

Is it 'loyalty' to stick to using one site or another?
Debatable, I'm happy to get the best from both :D .

I use WH, Scottishhills and UKClimbing, and I've occasionally looked through the Outdoors Magic forums, but haven't got around to joining - there's only so many forums you can keep up with!

UKC is full of people arguing about how much better they are than each other (at climbing and in life generally), but picking through the dross, you can find lots of interesting stuff in there.

I find that here and Scottishhills are just about on par with each other. If there is a difference, it is that WH is slicker and works better, while Scottishhills has lots more posters interested in the 'lesser hills' which appeals to me.

I don't really understand the need for rivalry between the two sites - any suggestions that the forums of one are more friendly and welcoming than the other are based on a lack of knowledge of one or the other.

Pretty much says it for me - I barely keep abreast of things here yet alone 1 or 2 others. Also tend to waste lots of time on Flickr.
