Got to the bottom of meall ghaordaidh yesterday to find myself and the girl 1 ice axe short.
Never mind we thought, here now and we will give it a bash and see how far we get and we have to turn back then that is what we have to do.
I reckon we were no more than 200 m short in distance and may 30 m in height from the summit when the combination of gradient and ice and incoming blizzard meant it was obvious that she could go no further. I was highly tempted to carry on myself (especially after a 3 hour slog through the snow to get to that point
) but we have a rule when out that we stick together.
A wee bit gutted at not making the sumit but a fantastic day out nonetheless.
If I was on my own, even without axe, I'm probably stupid enough that summit fever would take over. What is the closest others have been before making the decision to turn back?
