The Most Remote Hills In Scotland ?

The Most Remote Hills In Scotland ?

Postby SouthernUplandKing » Fri Jan 27, 2012 8:53 pm

Anyone have any suggestions of some remote walks where I can set up a BC and just knock off hills over a long weekend ? Preferably Munro's but would be happy with Corbetts and Grahams, just looking for that "long way from home" feeling.

Any help appreciated,

Cheers !

How about the Fisherfield 6 (or is it 5 yet). You can walk into Shenevall bothy and then do a magnificent circuit. You might be best waiting until the days are a bit longer though.

It truly is one of the last great wildernesses. I spent two nights at Shenevall, doing the circuit in between. It would be possible to wild camp half way round but it would mean carrying a tent etc over all the mountains. One point to note is that there are a couple of river crossings without bridges and the river can become impassable in a matter of hours if it rains, but then again it drops quickly again. If you want remote, this is the place to be, but don't tell everyone - doh!

Glenbeg bothy.

Stayed one night in February a few years back, a very lonely night!

What about the munros of Knoydart?
Depending on how purist you are, you can either walk in from Glenfinnan or Shiel Bridge. Or if you are more practical, drive to Kinloch Hourn or to Strathan at the west end of Loch Arkaig.
I have only walked through Knoydart on my way to Cape Wrath and was stunned by its remoteness and rough wilderness. There are some bothies but I can’t comment on their state as I was wild camping at the time. So far my best trip!

One I have been looking at recently is the Munro Ben Klibreck from Crask Inn (or thereabouts) with the nearby Grahams (can't remember their names) thrown in as well. Looks pretty remote to me! :D

Maybe a few days at Culra? a day to do Aonach beag, Ben Alder & ben Bhoel the next and maybe a day in Ardverickie forest doing the 3 hills there.. I did a similar trip last year and it was amazing
I'd bring your own company if you want it though.. I saw a few cyclists in the distance, but hardly met anyone for 5 days :S

I'd second Knoydart, fantastically remote, especially around Ben Aden. The bothy at Barrisdale can get busy, by Knoydart's standards anyway, not sure about Sourlies.
Or how about Assynt, ok so it'd be a fair hike between peaks, but the almost prehistoric style landscape is something else and with the number of lochans and streams criss-crossing the landscape it feels even more remote than it is.

Liking all these suggestions folks ! Will try and do them during the week to minimise numbers of people seen. The thought of being out there with nothing but the hills, the water and the wind puts the fear in me, but its a good fear, almost exciting.

Drawing up a short list :

-Fisherfield Six (Or is that five?)
-Tarf Hotel
-Knoydart
-Ben Alder Range
-Assynt
-Glenbeg Bothy

Anyone care to add, I'd be happy to see more ideas :)

If an approach by water along Loch Mullardoch is excluded i’d vote Mullach na Dheiragain as one of the remotest hills. A round of MnD, its neighbour Sgurr nan Ceathreamhnan along with all their tops would be up there in my top ten best walks. A base camp at the west end of Loch Mullardoch would give access to these hills along with Mam Sodhail, Carn Eighe and Beinn Fhionnlaidh.
