Skye Trail - Dangerous path advice

Skye Trail - Dangerous path advice

Postby StevieJarron » Fri Mar 09, 2012 7:09 pm

Hi all,

Has anyone got any advice on part of Stage 5 - Sligachan to Elgol from Camasunary along the cliff path to Elgol.

The guide says that it is steep and dangerous. We were walking last year from Strath Kanaird to Achiltibuie "taking the rock and we got a scare on the sheer drop, very narrow path there.

The main issue was having a large stupid dog on a lead to contend with. There were times when there wasn't enough width of path for him to turn round, but he did it anyway, gave us a few frights. On the Skye walk we'll have rucksacks AND a large stupid dog on a lead!

There is a cut through to Elgol from Camasunary that we could take but we hope to be able to take in the whole route round if it isn't too bad and the warnings about are over played even though people have fallen there).

Cheers Stevie

I've walked that route a few times, but the last time was about 5 years ago. Then it was no problem, even though there were signs to say it was dangerous in parts, you were never really near to any large drops where it was unsafe. I seem to recall that one part of the path was eroded, but there was a newer diversion to bypass it.

Walked that path last June. There are some steep sections but in good weather it was nothing that experienced walkers should be worried about. Indeed, we passed a couple with mountain bikes who had done the southern section. Mind you, the northern section is worse!

However, if the weather is bad, especially if it is windy, I would avoid it. There are some very open sections, and with a dog ...

Best views would be to go from Elgol northward.

Oh, and it goes without saying, but this is Skye, so take plenty of insect repellent!!!
