Naked Rambling

Since the Naked Rambler is back in the news, released by Tayside police and then re-arrested by Fife police 3 days later, it brought back memories of my holiday to La Gomera in the Canary Islands in 2007.

My first day walking I noticed someone in the distance taking photos of himself. He looked to be in the nude. I thought he must be wearing light coloured shorts. The more I strained my eyes to see, he was definately bare buff. Wow we have a Naked Rambler here as well, I thought.

Back at apartment terrace a couple asked if I saw the naked guy. They told me he is actually staying in this apartment block and would probably join us on the terrace.

He did join us and after some wine I made arrangements to go walking with him the next day. He appeared in the morning wearing something like a sackcloth. We left the small town of Valle Gran Rey and as the last houses disappeared he whipped off his sackcloth. Totally starkers he was. I just thought better him than me. I walked behind intrigued. Luckily the trail was quiet, I think we only met one other couple whilst going through bushes so they never had long to thinkabout it.
I took a few discreet photos with his permission as I didn't think folks back home would believe me.

Back down to habitation, where he put back on his sackcloth.

Have any other walkers come across these Naked Ramblers whether at home or abroad?
Do you have any opinions about this practice?
Personally it doesn't bother me one way or the other. .

I find folk avoid me, even if I take off my shirt.. Bra and trousers isn't that bad imo, but folk are embarrassed nonetheless

Couple of years ago I was going through into the Lairig Ghru from Luibeg and met a couple coming towards me. She was dressed quite normally for a warm, late spring day. He was in the buff apart from a pair of boots and a walking pole. (A WALKING pole. Stop sniggering at the back there.)
It WAS early in the morning, but it's not what you generally come across in the busiest way through the Cairngorms.

I have not yet come across naked ramblers, but the strangest thing I have been asked is to take a naked picture of a rather old guy (at the time still dressed) on top of a wee hill in India....before I could say anything, I was given his camera and 3 seconds later the full monty...

As for the real naked rambler, while I feel that he is a silly bugger and may have caused some people distress or alarm I cannot help feeling sorry for him and his family. He has spent years in jail which is a severe punishment for what is basically an eccentricity.

He could have compromised a little, but on the other hand, being nude in public is not illegal.

I've no problem with nubile Swedish women wandering the hills naked, though I do have a problem finding them .....

I wouldn't strip off if I expected to meet other people, but when on my own, why not?

I don't claim to be well-versed in the law but I would have thought naked rambling would be classed as "Indecent exposure".

If I were to see anyone with their genitals on display - not including being caught urinating etc - I wouldn't feel deeply-offended. I might initially feel awkward/embarassed and "not know which way to look" but I wouldn't feel the need to phone for the police.
I agree that the infamous "Naked Rambler" appears to just be an eccentric.
Perhaps Indecent Exposure is a law in place to stop 'Flashers' and the like using the excuse "I'm just an eccentric"?
