Strathfarrar Munro's - Anyone done these from Strathconon

Postby spiderwebb » Sat Sep 29, 2012 6:10 pm

Anyone done the Strathfarrar circuit from the north via Strathconon.
Looks to be a good track and then path from Inverchoran near the road and eventually over the River Orrin and a path shown on OS into the coire below Carn an Gobhar.

May be a fair walk in but compared to the return walk back to your car parked in Strathfarrar via the locked gate it doesn't seem too bad...in fact may even be less distance, without the time constraints.

You may not have the constraints of the locked gate but you would miss out on visiting Strathfarrar which is a lovely glen. If you can arrive on time for the gate it is pleasant drive through the woods and easy to complete the circuit during the opening hours. With poor deer management Strathconnon has hardly a tree to be seen.

I'm sure some folk must have done it - I want to have a go myself - but the only report I have seen for this approach is by Astronick (and you have to go to his blog as he hasn't posted it here).

I love Strathconon - one of my favourite glens and a lot quieter than the surrounding areas. Strathfarrar is obviously worth a visit but it'd be good to see the other side of these hills rather the the same old SMC circuit.

Malky C, my thoughts too. Looks a good path right into them below second from right Munro (name escapes me).

May be doing them this Thursday if weather not bad so I'll find out. Just to decide wether to go this way or the usual route from the gated road.

Might not be a bad idea to have a look at them from Bac an Each or Beinn Mheadhoin. You get a really good view of the potential route from those hills and can tick off a Corbett and Graham :D .

I've been thinking about this option as well, studied the map... All I know for sure, there's a track/path from Inverchoran to Loch na Caoidhe. But logically, there should be a reasonable net of paths in this area as it's pure stalking country.
We did Bac na Eich circuit in April, weather wasn't great but here is my report if it could be of any help:

There are some nice spots near the bridge around NH 268 468 or slightly further along that path with the trees for a windbreak. This was where I accessed the Strathfarrar Ridge from, albeit I camped further up the Orrin at Am Fiar-Loch. I can highly recommend the Strathconnan approach, especially if you can take your time and camp. The paths in that area are all very good and make for decent progress.

I have done Ruadh from Strathconon. It is a long way but a good route providing the river can be dealt with. You get to appreciate the desolation of Strath Orrin.

I have climbed the two corbetts - An Sidhean and Bac an eich from glen strathfarrer - travelling in with a party doing the munro group and meeting up with our lift at inverchoran. The going seems easy enough.
An interesting problem to do the four from inver - big day 28km with a reascent of Carn nan gobhar to reach the bridge at gr267467
2200mtr - 12hr + day with 11hrs of daylight

Benaden, yes been looking at the daylight, may have to hold these for next year, but think I've decided to tackle them from Inverchoran now.
Many thanks all :D

I've camped there on march 21, climbing the Strathfarrar Four from the north. The track leading into the corrie can be used. You'll have to find a way not to end up in the middle of the ridge. Probably best to head out west and make Sgurr Fhuar Thuill your first.
Note: the track from Inverchoran over to Glen Orrin has an ascent of 400m.
