Northern Lights

Northern Lights

Postby ScottishLeaf » Wed Oct 10, 2012 10:31 pm

Something special to look out for if you're out after dark/dusk. Increased solar activity means Scotland is seeing more of the Northern Lights just now.

A word of warning though the charged particles that cause the Aurora Borealis infere with GPS signals from satellites!

Saw it on the outskirts of Aberdeen on Monday night. I use the website below to monitor it.

We were lucky enough to be away from the city this past weekend so enjoyed the aurora from the Squilax Youth hostel in British Columbia. This hostel in on the TransCanada Highway located between Chase and Sorrento about 51' N latitude. Not only did we see the Aurora but at the same time we could hear the Sockeye salmon splashing in the Little River en route to spawning in the Adams River, a shooting star going over and the splash of a beaver. Altogether a great night :D

Should add, we were on Skye last week when they appeared. Shame we fell asleep 30 mins before the red alert got issued :(

Yes, the red alerts always seem to be issued just after I go to bed. Saw Monday's alert on Tuesday morning, so drove south from Aberdeen on Tuesday night to escape the urban glow (and cloud cover!) but couldn't really see anything much.

Oooh pretty!! I saw them once up in Alaska and only got two crummy pictures from back then, but that with a frozen (!) analog point and shoot that was bad even when thawed. So it's very cool to see your lovely pictures, thanks for sharing!

Cheers! That shot was 25 seconds. Much longer and the stars would have blurred. It was really dancing about - tried to get video of it but had no luck...

Cheers for that. Have been trying to catch them recently, but not sure how long I should have the shutter open for.

If you look at the Flickr page for the photo there's an action menu above the pic. Select Show EXIF data, and it will show you shutter speed, exposure, ISO and a whole load more info.
