2013 - New Years Resolutions / Aspirations / Plans

Postby MG1976 » Tue Dec 18, 2012 1:04 am

Just been reading some recent posts/topics and this idea came to mind.
LeithySuburbs "Dear Santa..." topic sort of triggered it.
We all want new (walking) things at Christmas; so it stands to reason that we should have a plan of sorts to validate that want.

I got to thinking that it might be interesting to see what peoples resolutions/aspirations/plans are for 2013, and to list them here as our own personal/collective targets.
Maybe we could all return in 12 Months and see how our plans worked out.

I'm happy to start things off, with the first reply to this post.

My 2012 has been a cruddy year. I lost my Dad in January and my motivation to hit the hills has been non-existant until about a month ago. I'm now realising how much my Dad would be kicking my back-side into gear; he loved the outdoors and the highlands, and it's because of him I appreciate the hills the way I do.

Over the last few years, my aim has always been focussed towards a target of numbers. 5 more hills, 10 more hills. This, I think can be healthy, but I have found that failing to reach such targets can detract from other things.

My aim for 2013 is still to increase my "hills baged" tally; but more importantly, I plan to focus more on the oppertunity to be able to climb hills at all. No matter what the weather, no matter if I reach the summit or not,

In 2013 - I "mg1976" plan to enjoy the hills again.

My new Mammut Boots (from Santa) should hopefully help me do so. :)

Good idea, but give me some time to sit down and think over my goals for the next year
In the meantime, some of us can check if last year's plans and targets have been fulfilled - I found this thread:

I beat my target

In saying that, I'm not going to set a target for this year and instead I'm just going to focus getting out on the hills whenever I can, much like MG. It's high time I broke my duck in the east of the country so hopefully I get out there soon although the cost of petrol prohibits me doing as many solo hills.

My aims for 2013 are to bag at least 36 new munro's. This will put my total to 200, anything over and above that will just be a bonus. I have an outing planned just after new year so it should get the year off to a good start, weather permitting.

Also looking forward to being involved in part of the WH meet in spring. I say that as I will have to bail out after the Saturday walk, but I will be up from the Wednesday.

Away from the hills, I intend to pick up my golf clubs again, and to dust of my trainers and aim to to a half marathon sometime in the year. As this year I will hit the big 5-0, :( :? I hope for good health and injury free year. :D

In 2013, I would like to:

1) Go back to the Alps (pref. Italy)
2) Go back to the Lake District
3) Go back to Snowdonia
4) Visit several Scottish Islands (already booked to go to Skye and Barra)
5) Do at least one Classic Rock route
6) Do a couple of easy Winter routes
... and if any of the above include summits, all the better.

Reasonably productive year in 2012, despite the weather.
Hills ascended in 2012:
4000m Alpine peaks: 5
Munros: 24
Corbetts: 4
Grahams: 29
New Donalds: 23
Furths: 14
Marilyns: 97
HuMPs: 118
Hewitts: 31
Wainwrights: 18
Total days on hill : 90

Foggie, have you ever been to Colonsay?
A fabulous little island that I spent many a childhood summer on. Not much in the ways of hills to climb, but there is some "McPhie Bagging" to be done, if you like a challenge.
22 peaks over 300ft, with the unofficial record currently sitting under the 4 Hour mark.

great idea. the first thing i'd say is, it's very easy to get out of the way of doing the things we enjoy. obviously in your case your dad's death hit hard, understandably so. but you're right....no doubt he would kick your backside and tell you to get out there! that's probably the first thing to target, just enjoying the hills/mountains whatever the weather. when it's good, make the most of it and be thankful  . when it's crap.... make the most of it and be thankful

personally, this year i didn't set goals yet managed to climb the highest peaks in N.Ireland, Wales, Rep of Ireland and, just last week, Scotland. along the way i climbed many other peaks in the areas i visited. it all kinda just happened - booking short trips here and there as long as i could walk/climb close by.

what i definitely want to try NOT to do is become a hill/mountain 'snob', that is, ignoring certain climbs because they aren't a munro, or the highest, or the most difficult, or they don't feature in books or magazines etc

i've been guilty of that yet looking back at this year, with the exception of Nevis, some of my best days out involved many un-sung peaks ( if you look at the photos i took you'll understand why 'the Ben' was my best 8) )

anyway, good way to get us thinking....thanks

1. Eat more fish.
2. Buy a van.
3. Escape Lanarkshire for ever.
4. Live the summer in Barra and the winter in Barcelona.
5. Get a proper job
6. Do a load of hills.
7. Stop smoking 40 fags a day.
8. See Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel live in Glasgow.
9. Be a principal player in the UK's socialist republican revolution.

That being said, I would settle for remaining alive, getting to 200 Munros and Albion Rovers avoiding relegation.

Albion Rovers have nae chance.

Me - build on the fitness I already have, get my SVQ3 passed and climb more hills. Any hills. I'm not fussy. Meet more hillwalking people. Any people. I'm not fussy

Nice thread. :)

My plans are to finish the Munros in the spring (possibly but not 100% certain - finances) and spend the summer walking them all again, early/mid-August finish.

More generally, finish and pass university then go and get a job. (oh god what is that? I just play drums and folk pay me atm! andyfitz - dunno if you're a Marillion fan judging by your post but <shameless plug>I play in a tribute called StillMarillion</shameless plug> if you're into that kinda stuff.)

Do some winter climbing.

Climb an E5.

Write an album.
