We were up the Ben at the start of May last year, at the same time as some massive youth group. WTF their "responsible adults" were doing letting them up there in shorts and trainers is beyond me.

I remember taking a few friends up the Ben last year and I think I may have irked them quite badly with how much I was banging on about the right footwear and clothes (we were there in August so the equipment list was quite small). I do remember berating one of the group for a few minutes for turning up in jeans, perhaps an overreaction by me but hey.

I'm all for getting as many people into exploring the mountains and uplands of Britain but no matter what the season people need to take seriously what equipment and clothing will be required. I've got no experience or equipment for walking in the winter months and as much as I get that gnawing temptation I have to slam my walking year shut usually around early October.

And now after that little monologue....... tut tut!

You always get people saying "I did it in trainers, or why do you need all that gear?".

If its a sunny day there and back with no mishaps then count your blessings but the what if factor means you MUST take the right kit...

Once, I witnessed a woman scrambling up Blaven in thin trainers - but it was in June and in good weather so hope she was lucky and returned home safe. I don't know 'cause we didn't wait for her

Seriously, the complete lack of imagination of some people makes my hair stand upright Of course, everybody makes mistakes, sometimes even experienced climbers forget stuff or lose equipment. But charging up the Big Ben in winter in trainers goes beyond my understanding.

On New Years Day I saw folk on Meall nan Tarmachan wearing jeans. I was descending past the 923m point as they were sitting there having a break. Although it was clear, the wind was quite strong at this point so I can only imagine how cold their legs would have been.

The guy in the link in the original post really takes the biscuit though

Nothing surprises me anymore. I suppose that's one of the benefits of being a Conductor for one of the train companies! I had to tell a Danish Couple off (diplomatically of course) near the summit of Schiehallion last October for being dressed in T-shirts, light jacket, jeans and trainers. Their excuse was they don't have any hills higher than about 100m! I hope they took my advice on-board.
