Save the honey bee

Save the honey bee

Postby clivegrif » Tue Jan 29, 2013 6:50 pm

I don't normally get involved in campaigning, and thanks to Paul for allowing this post.

Could I encourage you to have a look at and hopefully sign this Europe wide petition to ban a particular type of insecticide that is killing honey bees across europe - and we are seeing massive decline in this country too.

http://www.avaaz.org/en/hours_to_save_the_bees/?bXnHbdb&v=21422

You may have gathered that as well as loving the mountains, we also keep bees.

Thanks very much for your time and consideration.

Best wishes
Clive

Signed up 'clive', last year I cycled past a field outside Arbroath which had recently been sprayed and there was nothing but dead bees on the cycle track :(

Done! I'm not sure if signing such a petition really does anything, but it can't hurt and I'd like the bees to be around for a long while longer!

Done Clive, just over 1.6 million signatures when I added mine and plenty more pouring in :D

Here's a loaded bee photo that I took in the USA in 2008 - long may they continue their industrious efforts

Signed. Hope this has a chance. Farmers lobbyists have quite a powerful voice in Europe however and are not known for seeing the bigger picture.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks to every one here who has joined in, as I write more that 2 million people have signed this petition in the first 36 hours!

Interestingly B&Q and Wickes have announced today that they will stop selling the Neonicitinoid pesticides in question. Admittedly they are unlikely to sell to farmers, but at least fewer gardens will now be toxic to bees.

Rodmeister - that was dreadful, but I would put money on it that the farmer still got his 'wedge' of money from the EU environmental fund...

Boulderdash - yes they do, but hopefully the fact that some EU countries are already taking unilateral action may help.

Everyone else, thanks for taking the time, and I will provide an update after the vote. Lets hope that all these signatures do count.

Best wishes

Thanks very much to all that joined in with this - very nearly 2.5 Million folk have now signed this petition.

Quick update, the European Food Standards Agency have recommended to the EU Commission that the use of Neonicotinoids should be banned with certain types of crops that are attractive to bees, like Oil Seed Rape.

Unfortunately this overlooks the fact that this stuff persists in the soil for years, so even banning treated seeds may not be enough. This is potentially at best a partial victory, but at least some of the big countries in Europe are moving in the right direction.

Oh, and by the way, the British Government is intending to vote against it......

Thanks again

Hello All
Hopefully you caught it on the news but the EU have bowed to the pressure and imposed a Europe wide ban on 3 of the most commonly used Neonic pesticides.

The British Govt still complained that the science wasn't conclusive but the choice has been taken out of their hands. Funny that insufficient scientific evidence didn't stop them wanting to shoot lots of badgers, something that could make the Bovine TB situation worse not better.....

Unfortunately this stuff hangs around in the environment for years, but at least the situation now should not get worse for the 'Sweet Ladies'.

Thanks to everyone who joined in.
