How many of us listen to music whilst exploring our great countryside?

I always do when out alone, personally I find listening to music a bit of a motivator, can also distract me from how knackered I am

Same here, just isn't anything that comes close to hearing buzzards mewing, grouse whirring and back-backing, or deer belowing. Waterfalls and even just trickling streams are a joy too.

I generally walk alone and thus usually with music or even the occasional podcast...if you hear someone walking mumbling in French with an appalling accent, that'll be me lilstening to coffee break French podcast

Have to admit I like to listen to theme music to 'a history of Scotland' at the start of each walk...perhaps this should go on the confessions page...last weekend i put the iphone on random and enjoyed a walk where I didn't know what song was next...the transition from Rage against the Machine to Vaughn Williams can be very interesting

Honestly, I reckon if I didn't I'd be talking to myself by the end of the walk

I always have music on at home and in the car, but never on a walk. At work, it depends on the client whether I have music in the background or not.

Music whilst walking in the hills? not a chance. Akin to walking with your eyes shut!

You cannot be fully immersed in the experience if you do not allow all of your senses to engage with nature.

Each to their own I guess though.

I get the mobile out if I'm on a trudge. It's amazing what a positive effect playing the Benny Hill tune has when I play it on loop. All that's missing is the girls chasing me!!!

No, tried it once and I didnt like it, much prefer to hear what is going on.

Walking is a multi sensory activity for me so I like to hear everything that is going on, unless I'm in danger of hypothermia I will keep hoods, hats and gloves to a minimum - i like to feel the weather, I also like to have bit of stone in my hand as I'm walking along - dunno why but it just feels like another connection. I think much of this came from reading stuff by Syd Scroggie , the Dundee man who lost his sight in Italy in the war but continued to go to the hills and said he enjoyed it so much more even without his sight.

Having said all that I do have involuntary soundtracks in my head as i walk , usually filmscores and 90% of the time it is Lord of the Rings or Last of the Mohicans.

I second that, although nearly always walking alone, I'd never consider any music up the hills, too much other things to lisen to and to enjoy. Don't get me wrong I don't dislike music, I like a great variety of music and of late tried to broaden my taste in music, but not on the hills.

Notice from the other similar thread that there are plenty of us out there that like similar 70's, 80's rock

Noticed that the Jayhawks got a mention, got everything they ever made, along with Green Day, Marcy Playground, Ocean Colour Scene, Eagles & lots of Indie, Rock, Country Rock & of course who has got Beatles stuff (was going to say LP's but that kind of means vinyl - got rid of my vinyl a few years ago - stupidly, collectors items now)

Not a fan myself of listening to music when out walking,considering I listen to a lot of music.
Think one of the reasons I enjoy hillwalking so much is the getting away from it all feeling, I even
turn my mobile off..
If I was listening to music on the hills it would have to be The Waterboys ......
