Glenshee 9 - How difficult?

Glenshee 9 - How difficult?

Postby Backpacker » Tue Jun 18, 2013 6:54 pm

How difficult is this to do in one trip?

I'm debating with myself whether to attempt this in one go or to split it into 2, The Cairnwell 3 look pretty self explanatory, it's the other 6 I'm bothered about

I managed the Ben Lawers 7 the other week with not too much difficulty, just fluid issues and err pausing to take in the scenery

Ascent and descent aren't too much different, it would probably be the distance that catches me out.

Any advice welcome

If you managed the Ben Lawers 7 i would say that you can manage the 9 in 1 day, nothing hard just a slog.
Think we did them in about 9 hrs.

Enjoy

Should be fine, a longish day, maybe not as much ascent as Lawers but greater navigation qualities maybe required if the weather comes in, no fences like Lawers on the summits and just undulations no great focal points to target. Stay safe!

I've no idea precisely which summits make up the 9, but you're never that far from the road round here - set off and see how far you get? You can always leave out the hills to the west of the road if you don't feel up to it, or Creag Leacach (I assume that is one, but out on a bit of a limb).

I'm guessing you mean the 6 east glenshee hills plus cainwell/aosda & carn a geodaidh
i did the east 6 and would have kept on to the other 3 if my foot hadn't been as sore as it was
the walk back up to the ski centre from creag leacach is a bit dis-spiriting, but i'd say it would be a straightforward enough 9 to do - go for it!

We done the 9 at the start of the month - http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=32452

Took 9 hours, The first 6 are straight forward but the climb up the 7th from the road took it out me. We also done the Lawers 7 including a long walk back to the car and would say the glenshee 9 is similar in terms of effort.

This is the route we took -

Wow. That's a hell of a walk. I can understand doing the 6 on the east but - even then - you'd have to be going at a good pace to get them all done in a day. I can see why you'd do that.
I'd be tempted to leave the other 3 for the next day, or something. The thought of having to reascend those 3 on the same walk - which I did as a separate trip - I would feel a little disheartening in itself. Hey, that's just me though. I'm not a power/speed walker.
I did Glas Maol and Creag Leacach together as one outing but it could easily be added to the other 4. Just a long walk back to the car, as has been said earlier.

Thanks, since I decided to do this I've been having a look at the map and different routes, my thoughts on it currently are to park at the ski centre and do the westerly ones 1st then do the 6 over the other side of the road, finishing with Carn an Tuirc, almost a figure of 8 when you plot it out, the descent and ascent from Carn an Tuirc looks heartbreaking
