Suggestions for Corbetts or Munros when the wind is up?

Postby ntreanor » Fri Apr 11, 2014 9:33 am

Hi Folks,

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for Corbetts or Munros (especially within 2.5 hrs of Edinburgh) that are reasonable options when the wind is up (say, 50 mph). I'm thinking of routes where there is either significant tree cover much of the way, with an exposed dash to the summit (maybe an option with some Corbetts?), or where the landforms shelter the route from the prevailing winds. (I wondered, for instance, if this might be the case on the Beinn Mholach from Dalnispidal route).

Very grateful for any suggestions!

thanks,

Nick

Oh...I thought this was asking for easy ones when your knees are knocking?
It really depends on wind direction doesn't it?

I was in the Lakes last month and spent the weekend walking up hills with Eastern approaches as I was sheltered for all but the last part...made for a nice weekend

We went up a hill recently, on the sheltered side because it was windy.. Turns out we would of been better going up the other side because the wind kind of eddied round the hill, and was worse than just being in the wind!
50mph isn't too bad, unless you are going head on into it..

I've had that experience of "go up the east side to get out the wind". The result was battling uphill into the wind and battling downhill too as we dropped down to the car. The hill in question Meall a' Bhuachaille. You can go up one side and down the other to the bothy thus just get blown over it. And I guess being rounded and eastern not much chance of falling off.
