OS-style maps - for France

OS-style maps - for France

Postby denfinella » Tue Apr 15, 2014 5:10 pm

Hello,

We're off to Avignon in southern France for a couple of weeks this summer, and plan on doing a few shorter walks while we're there (probably not climbing any mountains though).

What are the best maps to buy for walking? In the UK I much prefer the OS 1:25000 over the 1:50000 maps for the greater detail. What's the most similar in France?

I've just been browsing and IGN looks like an option. Anything else?

As you've already discovered IGN is the mapping of choice. Easy to get hold of out there.

Thanks. Probably get a hold of a few of them then.

Also available cheaply on Dash4It!

Free downloads on http://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/accueil. If the quality is anywhere near the Swiss equivalent you should be more than happy with it.

Thanks both.

I've ordered a couple of maps from Dash4It now, and looking forward to them arriving. Poetessa, I was already aware of the website you mentioned (which is excellent!), but it's not the same as holding a paper map in your hand, even if you print it out... :)
