Prince Charles offered me a lift... and I turned him down!

I was out bagging the last of my White Mounth Munros today, starting from Glen Callater (full report to follow). So I was back to Lochcallater Lodge nearing 4 pm and there was a shiny new (well 58 plate) top-of-the-range Range Rover parked off the track. Thought estate workers get paid a decent wedge and after 9 hours on the hoof thought what I'd give for a lift. Then 5 minutes down the track there was a gent sat up 100m or so up the hillside with a note or sketch book. We exchanged waves and I set off after a group of 3 walker 200m or so up the route. I was so knackered I didn't catch this group, but about 1k from the car park I hear this Range Rover. So I move to the right verge and the 4x4 pulls up and the driver asks "How are you?". Me: "fine". Driver: "Would you like a lift". Me: "No thanks, I'm fine". Driver is no other than the future King :D

As a republican it was the only answer I could give  (mind you if he had offered up at Lochcallater Lodge I'm not so sure what my response would have been!

That gave me the spring in my step to catch up with the 3 walks (from Dundee) - and yes HRH had offered them a lift too.

Told the story to my wife but without give the name of the drive and asked her to guess. First response: Jerry Clarkson!, second Iain Banks (I'm a big Iain [M] Banks fan). When I said more famous than Iain Banks she got it.

Wow! That's a bit like in 'Mountain Days and Bothy Nights' where one of a group staying at the bothy between Balmoral and Lochnagar got offered a lift by the Royal Party 'cos he was lame but, seeing himself and his buddies as 'anarchists' and being totally anti-Royal, thought he'd better turn it down. I think I'd have taken it myself (but them I'm pro-royal) - it would have been a great story to take back to work!

Defo wouldn't have got in a vehicle with Jeremy Clarkson though as I think he's a d*ckhead!

Can see this getting a lot of hits with a subject like that though!! :D

Looks like Charlie was looking for another dinner time story to tell "How I helped the peasants on the munros" :D

The bugger! One time I was trudging along the side of Loch Muick, the rain was precipitating down and I was soaked to the skin. A landrover came up behind me, I stepped to the side, the driver looked out at me, shook his head and carried on without offering me a lift ; it was himself ! 'Bloody last time I vote Royal', I thought to myself as I sloshed homeward. Glad to see he's changed his attitude. God save the Queen!

Don't know any parties with an "abolish the monarchy" manifesto so have you not voted for a long time ;-) ?

I've never been offered a lift so not sure if I would accept. I reckon my sore feet might have taken preference over my own abolishonist tendencies!

No, I keep thinking I must look very dodgy as I never get offered lifts either! Either that or I must look like I'm going strong no matter how I'm feeling!

I hear Camilla fractured an ankle whilst hillwalking recently; lucky for her I wasn't around with my amputation knife set and jar of leeches. Does it really matter what family they were born into? Nobody gets the choice. At least they go hillwalking.

Have a wee bump in Snowdonia and you might get picked up by his son!
