Nice wee hills

Nice wee hills

Postby chickadee » Sat Nov 08, 2014 10:38 pm

So after my Mount Keen trip and the tendonitis/hip problem and having a bored and sad-chickadee few weeks, the physio told me I could start easing back into walking by 3rd week (which was last week) and after 6 weeks I could start trying hills (once I've done a bit of low level). Caveat: they have to be wee hills. I'm not allowed to do a Munro or even a Corbett till I build up to it. Not sure how long this will take, but she said the best thing to do is go by time rather than distance, so I have to measure how long I can walk for before something hurts, ha.

For this reason I'm after some 'nice wee hills' I can do to get back into it. I am in Fife and know the local ones to do, but I am happy to go further afield. I realise winter is on its way and it might be something I need to hold off till spring, but I'd really love to do at least one before Christmas if I can. The thing is, as I have to watch how long I walk for, I think I should avoid hills with a long walk-in and anything too steep.

Any suggestions? Anywhere in Scotland is fine because it's all good to know for the future, but more in the region of what MWIS terms 'southeast Highlands' would be ideal so I can do it in a day. Please humour me as I'm excited to even think about getting back out on a hill! Even if my Munro tally will have to wait till next year. :)

I feel your pain, missed all the summer with a knee injury. :(

Obviously you have numerous routes around the sidlaws which aren't too far. Have a look at balkello hill, this will give you a route for 3 hills which should take 2 ish hours to do the lot. You can head down to the carpark at any point.

Good luck

Oh no, sympathy from me! Especially during summer, boo. At least I can make myself feel better by the fact it's quite wet and cold but even so I'm going a bit mad being stuck in the office all week.

I'm from Dundee so yeah that might work, haven't actually done the Sidlaws, I always opt for going up Glen Clova if I'm at my mum's and fancy a walk. Should remedy that if they aren't too hard!

My favourite wee walk Perthshire http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/dunsinane.shtml

Deuchary Hill is good http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/loch-ordie.shtml and between Loch Ordie and Loch Benachally Creagan a Chait is also worth a visit.

Kinpurney Hill http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/angus/kinpurney-hill.shtml

if you want to take it up a level then the Goet is a nice walk and there are any number of walks you can do from the ranger centre at glen doll http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/angus/ben-tirran.shtml

Don't forget the southern neighbours... little or no walk in and lots to choose from.

How about the Ochils? BenCleuch for starters and Dumyat for a good wee one.

Nearest one with good parking is Bishop Hill at Scotlandwell
Good path, steep in bits, there is even a bench to sit & admire Loch Leven after a short while

Here is my report

Cheers for the suggestions. I did an hour of flat walking by Loch Leven on Sunday and my hip was aching the last 10/15 mins back. Not great, but it's only still 5 weeks now after I hurt it. Maybe not a hill yet but this is a good selection to try once I feel more confident!

Kind of worried I'll lose my bottle and get too anxious to do hills again :(
