New House....Same old Aurora

New House....Same old Aurora

Postby ChrisW » Tue Mar 10, 2015 5:30 am

After 3 years in North West Calgary Sarah and I have moved a little further west toward the mountains and bought a lovely house on a ridge top overlooking the town of Cochrane.

I was a little sad to leave our old place as the views were fantastic and I could watch the Aurora from my balcony, but after just 3 days in the new place I was reassured when the river and mountain views were complemented by a nice level 4/5 aurora.

So, here's a few shots from the new balcony

The first shot overlooking the town, mountains out of sight on the left. Note the highway leading up the hill on the right of shot

Image

The corner of my neighbors house and the rest of that highway running up the hill (this is the 1a that leads to NW Calgary

Image

This one is the 1a heading into the eastern end of the small town

Image

Wider still, showing more of the town and the long hill heading east

Image

Had a bit of trouble trying to join this one owing to the amount of time between either end of the image (each frame was around 6 seconds)

Image

Great start to the new place....all tied up in a bow :D

It was just last week Charlie, in Calgary they tend to be visible most often in winter (September - April) I think mainly because of the long dark nights giving much more time to see them. They are active all year round but in summer it would likely be 3am before it was dark enough to see them. One of these days I'm going to head out to the mountains with a flask and get some shots with mountainous foregrounds.....well, that's what I keep telling myself

Further north they are almost a nightly event.

Congratulations on you new home, are the daytime views as good?

Great pictures, but what I would like to know is how Cochrane, which, according to its Wikipedia page is at 51 degrees N, and even with a fair amount of light pollution, gets great views of the aurora while here in the central belt of Scotland - 56 degrees N, we rarely see them. I know that our light pollution, especially from Grangemouth, is probably a lot worse, but that can't be the only factor. Is there a scientific explanation?

Thanks Tinto, yeah the daytime views are pretty sweet too, mountains to the west and prairie hills directly across the town and the beautiful Bow river in the valley below :D

As for the Aurora there probably is a scientific answer to that but I really don't know what it is, sorry  I used to long to see the Aurora and never thought I'd get the opportunity, now I've seen it about 50 times and loved every one, and I'll still be out with the camera for 51, 52, 53

I hope you get some good displays over Scotland again this year (I know there was a cracker last year)
