Marriage proposal

Marriage proposal

Postby inaweofscotland » Mon Jul 20, 2015 10:08 pm

Hi Guys,

I guess this is an awkward question to post here, but here it goes.
My girlfriend and I love hiking, and for several years now have had the urge to visit and hike Scotland.
We finally bought our plane tickets and should start our trip sometime this August.

I thought of serving Scotland's beautiful nature as my romantic scenery and propose marriage in a the midst of the Ring Of Steall trail. What I really want to do is at a peak's top (or perhaps any other beautiful location) have a picnic set up for us, and a musician with traditional Scottish clothing and a bagpipe play "here comes the queen", than of course kneel and propose.

Unfortunately, I'm not from Scotland, and I have no idea how to get this wonderful idea into practices. I'm willing to pay of course. Could you recommend or suggest how I can make this vision a reality?

Boy, I do hope she'll say yes :)

Thanks !

You might be in luck, since I have just had a look at his map, and he doesn't seem to have done the Ring of Steall.

Isn't there also a member on here who cooks a steak when he gets to the top of a munro? That would get your picnic sorted!

Lovely ideas, very romantic. There's one wee consideration when planning such an event at a fixed time and place: Never, ever underestimate the unpredictability of the Scottish weather. Especially in the hills, and especially if you've not visited before. "Four seasons in one day" isn't an exaggeration.

Be prepared to:
-- Propose from on all fours, rather than from on one knee, because the wind is that fierce.
-- Not hear your beloved's answer because your ears are filled with rain.
-- Not be able to see her finger to put the ring on because the clag is that thick.

You might want to have a Plan B, just in case.

If, however, you're lucky enough to get one of those glorious sunny blue-sky perfect days with astonishing views in all directions, it'll certainly create the memory of a lifetime. Regardless of her answer.

then an alternative would be some place closed. Can you think of any recommened area?

What a fantastic idea. A lucky lady, no doubt.

If the weather is rubbish on the hills on your planned day, the meadows in upper Glen Nevis with Steal Falls in the background would make a good alternative instead of continuing with the Ring of Steal walk. So you could leave the decision quite late, as the starting point is the same.

If you do end up low level, hope there's a breeze to keep the midges off.

What a wonderful idea, true romance isn’t dead :D

Given plane tickets I’m assuming you are not from the UK and hence trips to Scotland cannot be as regular as you would like. If that isn’t the case then maybe you could propose on your final Munro or Corbett, given there are over 200 of either that would give you plenty of time to ensure you are making the right decision  and round off an epic adventure in truly romantic style.

Either way, congratulations in advance and be sure to come back on this site with a report/photos of the happy event :D

We're from Israel.
That is some beautiful view!
The only thing that might be missing there is a bagpipe though :)

Yeah, who is that?

I'm sure his BBQ thing is made out of a wheel cover or something. I'd like to see a picture of it.

If Munrobagpiper isn't available then talk to the Piping Centre in Glasgow, they might be able to put you in touch with someone. I'd link it but am too new to post links at the moment! And if you need a photographer, give me a shout, I'd potentially be up for that for it!

Good luck lad, it's a great plan!

If the weather is rubbsih you could also ask for her hand in marriage in a bothy after the walk...http://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/
Depends on where it is it might be easier to get a bagpiper to come along, or start piping when you are inside.
