what was the panorama website?

what was the panorama website?

Postby pony23 » Fri Dec 18, 2015 3:36 pm

A few years back, a handy foreign (.de?) url was posted on this site which gave a wireframe panorama (with visible peaks named) website which showed the panorama from any point you want round most of the world. I have lost it but does anyone know it?

PS there's quite a good one at <http://www.mountainpanoramas.com/>
which is photographic so more detailed. You can pan around and zoom in. Amazing when you first try. They've done 100s of points. But you're limited to where they've gone up on selected peaks (and sometimes from low ground) and taken photos.

Not see the photographic one before. Must take ages unless they have a way of generating the labels.
I did this one manually a few years ago - http://www.prog99.com/Stuff/aonach_mor_panorama.jpg

This is an oldie but pretty good. http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/panoramas.html#sco

On the panoramas on our hill pages, you can jump automatically to any hilltop viewpoint by clicking in the name in the panorama for the hill you are currently on.

There is also an app for a phone camera "Show Me the Hills UK" which label the hills as you hold the camera screen up . I have found it not all that much use as the screen is so reflective I find it hard to read. You have to ensure the phone's GPS s on.

Now I just need an App that can identify bird song.

They do exist: I've not tried them so have no idea if they are any good!

Sadly doesn't work for me, neither with Explorer nor Firefox. When I hover over the link, the arrow remains and the pointing finger doesn't appear :(

Just checked and it does work on all browers. Show the panorama (e.g. on this page http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/munros/aonach-mor), wait for it to draw. Click on the name of a hill - this brings up a little info box. Then click the wee man to move your viewpoint to there.

I got Sound Hound thinking it would do that. It is very good, as it can even bring up "Yesterday" as a first choice when I hum it...not so sure of its second and later choices for it "Sin Miedo a Nana" and the second English language suggestion "Great is Thy Faithfulness". But if I tried to replicate bird song, it would just give me some title.

I could be wrong, but I think what Sgurr wants is Shazam for birds...in other words it would identify the bird song for you. A quick google search suggests it's been tried a couple of times. I haven't tried them, but this guy has...

Yes, I want a Shazzam for birds, but maybe it would be a beginning to guess what I thought it was and then listen to the call and find out I am (almost invariably) wrong, which is presumably what David Main has.

Tried Shazzam, but it says it doesn't identify whistling or humming. In than respect, Soundhound is better for tunes which have been bothering you.

10 year old grand-daughter has been staying and asking me what all my (forgotten) apps are. At least she has been able to fix my Smartphone so that it clicks when it takes pictures, so now I know when I have.
