"path" from Lochan Fada and Loch an Nid

"path" from Lochan Fada and Loch an Nid

Postby krautbiblio » Fri Jul 29, 2016 8:07 pm

Hello everyone,

In the beginning of September, I'll walk from Kinlochewe to Shenavall bothy. At Lochan Fada, I got the choice between two "paths" :

- The End to End Trail guidebook recommends to walk between Creag Ghlas Bheag and Loch Meallan an Fhùdair because "there is good walking on a stony rounded ridge, avoiding the peat on either side"
- The Cape Wrath Trail guidebook prefers to walk on the left side of the Creag Ghlas Bheag (and not on the right side as EET's option) because "it's best to stay higher as the ground below is very rough and boggy"

So, what's the best choice? And what's the best choice if there's rain, mist, or thunderstorm?

Hi here is a link to the route that I took when doing the CWT last May

Cant comment on the EET option without getting the maps out but the left side definitely has a walkable path.

The Walkhighlands description and map of that section may help - GPS can also be downloaded for the detail.

This May I did that following the CWT Guide route.

It says about staying on the higher ground but it's not too difficult. It wasn't even boggy when I passed through.
I'm not sure where the other route takes you but the CWT route is stunning. As you pass Loch an Nid the rock formations to the far side are amazing.
I made the mistake of passing straight through to get to the bothy. It's now on my list to go back, camp by the loch and have a closer look.

Hope I've swayed you....
