How is the river crossing from Shenavall to Fisherfield?

How is the river crossing from Shenavall to Fisherfield?

Postby Dommie » Sun Aug 07, 2016 6:45 pm

Hi,
Can someone please advise me what to currently expect when crossing the river named Abhainn Srath na Sealga? I would like to do the Fisherfield Munros from Shenavall very soon.
Thanks
Dommie

Expect wet feet, beyond that it depends on the weather in the run up to your trip.
Of the two I found the one at Larachantivore easier(kept boots on the three times I've crossed it before) although I should mention that I've only ever made trips in the springtime to the area.

It was a doddle in May - just hoped over on the stones without any difficulty.
No need for wet feet or boots off, or river-crossing-crocs
It had been exceptionally dry though, so I was probably very lucky.

Check out my report http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=63185

If you are intending to do the whole route there are 3 crossings and if you don't get wet feet from them, crossing the 'swamp' back to the Bothy will definitely get you

Fyfe Flyer - in May there wasn't even a bog. It was crispy!!!
No problems with any of the 3 rivers.

It was my bestest trip so far.
Loved loved loved the Fisherfields.

What a difference a couple of weeks make. End of April it was a different story. The clip is the Abhainnn Loch An Nid which runs into it. Luckily I crossed the Strath na Sealge before they converged and it was only half as wide, it was fast flowing though and nearly had me off my feet. If the level ad been any higher I wouldnt have tried it. Further down it would have been impassable.

Sorry to bump this thread, but me and Mrs Baggins are heading this way in a couple of weeks, has anyone experienced the river crossings recently? Thanks

Good point. You can avoid the river crossings using Guinnessman's route for the eastern Fisherfields and doing the western two from Poolewe, a beautiful walk.
