Midges.. Oban area... October 2016...

I'm going to Oban this Monday . ? Visiting Kerrera ( north and south loop ) , Dunbeg ''peninsula'' and maybe Mull. Low level sea shore stuff mostly .

Have the midges disappeared for the autumn /winter or do I need to be geared up for them with nets and potions ?

Shouldn't be too bad, but if the temperatures stay moderate like they have been recently, then you might find a few at lower levels. I certainly noticed the odd one lurking yesterday afternoon.

I did the Glenshee three with my two wee boys yesterday. Glorious sunny warm day. It was pretty cool on the drive up though (7-9 degrees C) and that may have killed most of them off. We saw lots of wildlife through the day, but no midges!

Sub-zero temperatures were forecast for overnight, and there is an autumnal nip in the air. I've been to Glen Coe, Glen Etive and the Trossachs in recent days; all midgie infested in the season but none at all recently. I reckon they're done for the year. Huzzah! :D

We were rock climbing near Gairloch a few days ago in ideal midge conditions: no wind, mild and overcast, but there were literally only one or two about.

I wouldn't count on them being gone just yet! I was on Kerrera at the weekend and came back with a few bites. There's been no wind and lovely warm weather here the last week so the little blighters think it's summer all over again. They're certainly not as bad as mid-summer on Skye but maybe take repellent just incase. Shame you've missed the Kerrera tea room.

Midges might be gone but keds definitely are not! They were quite annoying yesterday in Torridon! They rarely bite, but plucking them out of your hair is not the most pleasant experience. They tend do wriggle into anything hairy or fluffy

Just back....A very pleasant ,sunny week(mostly....) No midges or clegs found on Kerrera , Lismore , Dunollie woods or even the boggy foreshore between Craignure and Castle Duart on Mull ! !

Hopefully you missed the torrential rain at the weekend and there's always the lovely tea room on Lismore.

Just caught the first of the rain as leaving Oban. And yes ,enjoyed the tea room and reconstructed croft . The tea room makes a very very good cuppa coffee and flapjacks .Good and pleasant service too.

(Sorry so late in replying )

A Merry Christmas to all.
